I picked a certain tuner because of the support he provided to this forum, excellent recommendations, and experience with F150s. When I had a problem when I upgraded from X-Cal1 to X-Cal2 on my 04 F150, I got my problem taken care of right away. I even got a call on a Sunday just to make sure my truck was running right. That right there made me a very loyal customer. I traded in my 04 for 07 F150 and stayed with the same tuner because of the customer support and the tunes.

I think that "Mr. 80's Guy" is right. You can tell how many people bought Troyer from all the people belly-aching about how long they had to wait.

I wonder if there is a way we could poll everyone. Real simple. Which device you have, canned or custom tunes, who wrote the tune, are you happy?

I bought my 04 Lariat 10-24-03, and back then the only one tuning the 3-valve was Mike and I’ve stuck with him ever since and he’s stuck with me, updating my tunes as he perfected his game; a great guy and friend, Thanks Mike

I went from a 1715 Superchips to a Xcal-3 with custom tuning....very noticable difference when comparing the two. I'm still getting used to the whole mapping of the shift points and such from when I had the canned tunes.

Matt from "The Mustang Shop" tuned my f150.

I think this is what you need to consider when deciding on a tuner.

Do you want gauges and real time info? If yes, Edge or Gyrphon.
Do you want the above with a custom tune? If yes, Gryphon is your tuner.

If you just want a tuner with no gauges and canned tunes. Lots of options, SCT, Superchips, Predator Diablo and a few others.

If you want a just a tuner with no gauges and tunes made just for your vehicle, then a SCT programmer custom tuned by Troyer Performance or VMP Tuning would probably be the route you should consider.

How to pick between the two? Price is pretty close for either. Troyer has more experience with the F150 custom tuning. VMP has way faster turn around. It seems by the reviews by people on here, both drastically change F150's for the better.

I picked VMP for the quick turn around and impressive reviews I read about on here.

What year vehicle do you have Joe? Most new vehicles use programmers, not chips, it's a hand held device that you plug into your ODB-II port below the dash. Typically it's always below the steering wheel on the kick panel. The programmer just plugs into that and you hit a few buttons and the vehicle is now tuned. The stock tune is saved onto the programmer. Now the best programmer, IMO and a lot of people, is the Xcal2 and Xcal3. There are minor differences. And than you buy it from a tuner who loads custom tunes to the device based on your vehicle, your mods, where you live, octane, and your PCM strategy and code. My personal recomendation is Justin with www.VMPTuning.com as well as a bunch of people on here. Justin is a great guy, he's got great tunes, great prices, great turn around time, and great customer service. I'll post you up links for the two devices from Justin's website.

Xcal2 with 3 custom tunes = $395

Xcal3 with 3 custom tunes = $399

Spin it? Nope, Joe did that for us. I was being polite, answering his question, instead of just saying Welcome. I would of sent him a PM but he is a new member. I did mention that it was my personal recomendation, don't get your feelings hurt.

I picked Troyer Performance, even knowing about the long wait times, for one reason: I wanted the BEST and the SAFEST. Thats exactly what i got.

The wait is worth it for me. Nobody has more experience or has done more R&D on these trucks and their mods like intakes etc. It really shows through customer satisfactions/reviews.

Wait times suck. But knowing that this time is going toward consistent R&D and improvement is a nice feeling when you're trusting him with the safety of your truck.

You know who my personal recommendation is.

Back to mowerjoe's question, if you'd like a programmer that also gives you extra gauges, get a Gryphon from Bill Cohron at www.powerhungryperformance.com

I'd call him first and let him explain what the programmer can do for you. And, don't worry, he's a "straight shooter" who will not try to "push" you into anything.

I have a Gryphon in my truck and I'm very happy with it.

Just so you'll know, if you haven't figured it out already, most of us are fiercely loyal to the guy who tuned our vehicles.

I forgot to mention that I have used Justin with VMPTuning.com for a 2006 F150, not just the Mustang. I didn't want you to get the wrong idea, Joe.

Definitely get the Gryphon if you want something like the Edge. The Edge sucks compared to the Gryphon.

PS: msall150 check your PMs, please.

It's nice to know some people are still honest to themselves.
