You do not need to return to stock to switch tunes. Not sure what your specific issue is.... as I've never had that occur. I'd try it again.

(You could also just give 'em a quick call, if it in fact is not switching tunes, and isn't user error )

Good luck.

Somehow I knew you'd be first to chime in! You always have some helpful information. Question, when changing programs, will the tuner need to upload information for the 87 perfomance tune? In other words will the tuner need to upload that particular tune like it did when I first installed the 87 tow tune?

Hey Mitch.

I think the best way to visualize this is; there are three files (tunes) stored in non-volatile memory on the Xcal2, along with the initially saved stock tune file.

There is also an area in the PCM reserved, where the stock tune file lives.

The first action you take (rather, the Xcal2 takes), is to copy the stock tune file from the PCM to the Xcal2.

Next step, if you are gonna be loading a new tune, is the PCM reserved NVM space is erased, and the KAM is cleared (where the adaptive strategy stuff lives).

Next, the selected new tune file is written - a straight file write, with attendant sanity ( CRC, whatever) checks to ensure a reliable write.

Now - if you wanna load yet another tune - it's just a repeat of the erase/write/check process.

They're really just files - in a different format, but still just files. Bit for Bit replacement.

Kinda simplistic, but there it is.

Is there a way to tell what tune you already have loaded in if you forget? In other words, I have a 93 Tow and 93 Perf. tunes. Before I take a chance on towing I want to make sure I am in the tow mode. Is there a way to check this?

Plug 'er in - it'll show ya what's currently in use.

Or - do what I do - put a sticky note on the back of the Xcal2, with loaded tune info & a date.

well i got an xcal2 off someone for cheap, so i decided "what the he!! might as well get troyers tunes for it."

i do mostly highway driving to the ranch and to the duck blinds, and also to college and back (duck blinds are 30 mins from campus ), with occasional towing. my engine has seen only 87 octane fuel for the first 75k of its life, so i got 87 perf and 87 tow, along with a 91 perf tune also. but now its just for the wait.
