XCal2 ????s

Three years ago when I purchased my 2004 Ford Expedition w/5.4 2v engine, I also purchased the Superchips Microtuner #1714. I was and still am pleased with the results and feel that it was a very worthwhile investment. I see that the XCal2 tuner works on my engine too. Would it be a noticable enough improvement to upgrade to the XCal2? What kind of improvements would I expect to see? Thanks.

switching tuners really wouldnt be worth the extra money... Unless you have done other mods, then you can have the xcal II custom programmed.

OK, so what other mods can be done to the 2v 5.4 to give it a little more ooomph? Or do I need to just upgrade to an Expy with the 3v? Thanks

look in my sig. I added over 100hp from stock. All dyno tuned. If your going to swap engines, go with a lightning engine and tranny, not a 3 valve.

Any other opinions? After reading alot of XCal2 reviews here, I can't help but wonder if I would get more performance than I am getting from my Superchips #1714. Has anyone made this jump, and if so, was it worth it? Remember my engine is the 2v not the 3v, if that makes any difference. How about it Mike, is it worth the jump on the 2v? I would also be considering a CAI. Thanks

Absolutely...you will realize far better driveability, and increased power by switching from the 1714 to the Xcal2 with Mikes custom tuning. If you add an AirForce1 intake with it ( buy the package) your power increase and optimum driveability will increase even more...

One nice thing is the ability to continue to upgrade the tunes to match any future upgrades you may do to your truck. That's the nice thing about the Xcal2, you can have new maps made and sent to you via email for any future stuff you may do.

I just ordered my Xcal2 and AF1 intake from Troyer. I already have the Magnaflow catback. I am in an area where we get 10% ethanol in our gas, that will be accounted for in my tunes from Troyer. It is more than just a generic map like with the Superchips or Edge, it is made to your truck's setup and the fuel you normally run.

Sell your Superchips to offset the cost of the Xcal2!

Thanks!

That gives me some ideas. What kind of gains would I expect to see in the 2v 5.4? The AF1 intake concerns me a little as I am in a very dusty, sandy climate and the filter is not in a box. Is this a concern? Also, if Mike reads this, have you done many tunes for the 2v 5.4 Expeditions? Thanks!

Don't worry about dust and the AF1 intake. Cleaning is easy and will not be required as frequently as you may think in your enviroment.
I prefer an open element filter versus a closed or boxed one as the open one draws more air, and is not hampered by underhood temperatures as some may think.
I have spent a lot of time with Mike and witnessed many of his 5.4 2V tunes.
You will be all the time after you do the tuning. Guaranteed!!

Hi yorel,

Actually, the reality of this is only known by those who actually do proper back to back testing under controlled conditions - it requires very thorough knowledge of not only PCM & powertrain operations, but also of chassis dyno methodology, datalogging & being able to actually correlate the data to interpret results properly - we have a strong racing background, so this is precisely what we do.

We put on public dyno days from time to time to do exactly this, show the difference between of the shelf types of tuners and what our tuning does - for example, the last time we put on a demonstration of the difference between the Superchips 1714 unit (which we carry, of course, being Superchips oldest distributor) and our own tuning, the gains we made were almost triple that of the Superchips 1714 units on those 5.4's.

So yes, our custom tuning will get a *much* better result, and will also be updateable for any future modifications, and we can dial in th A/F ratios, something that the off the shelf units cannot do properly.

All in all, you'd be much better off with our custom tuning - if you;d like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to help.

So what I need to do is get some dyno testing done at stock, with my 1714, and then after I get the custom tuning done? What are some average dyno costs? Also does anyone know any reputable dyno shops in Las Vegas? Thanks.

dyno

You only need to put your truck on the dyno with the 1714 or stock if you want to compare it with the results after the xcaliber II. Can't help you with dyno costs.
