Any mud or dirt will settle to the bottom of the pan and/or get trapped in the filter. Drop the pan & clean it real good. Pull the dipstick tube and clean that real good. You see dirt on the bottom of the dipstick because it's packed in at the top of the tube, but the stick has to pass through it to come out. Change the filter and fill it with fresh Mercon, you'll be good to go.
If you did get dirty water into the MAF, you need to either slow down going through puddles, relocate the fresh air intake to a higher location or put a snorkel on the truck .

Well, my two cents.

I was there, and Vader was treated with nothing but kindness, believe me.

And after he left, the only comment made, was poor guy, drove all the way down here...

Actually everyone still there felt bad including mike.

Now speaking for myself ONLY, I wouldn't of put it on the dyno either.
Wet MAF, mud in the transmission fluid, god knows where else.

So, if the truck is put on the dyno anyway, and smokes something tranny etc, who would be responsible??

Who would be blamed???

And I am not a expert by any means, but how can you tune a truck under these conditions??

The "he should of done it anyway" crowd would be singing a whole different story if their truck was damaged on a dyno.

The first thing one of them would say to Mike, is you shouldn't of done it, if it would hurt my truck, you know better .

IMHO, not dynoing it protected two people mike and vader period.

Sounds like Mike was looking out for both your intrests, something to be said for that.

But come on, things goin up in smoke, this is what we love to see, should have been to a car wash to hose the underside and run it. I bet it would have made for a great day to see some breakage.

Vader you should've took one for the team.

When yo go to the beach run it through the water and clean everything off underneath it.

Hope you drive was a good one.

Vader--

I hate to hear this bud... really a bummer. I don't doubt for a minute that the right thing was done across the board there... sometimes it's tough to snub what you really want to do for what is best to do... Mike was, indeed, looking out for the best interests of EVERYONE there... you, him, the spectators, etc...I feel for you bud. Look at it this way though, since you've having to shelve this trip, I may be over there next dyno-day and thus, you can meet me. LOL!

Just trying to make you smile bud... enjoy your time at the beach and enjoy the 'scenery' while you're there. You need to pull yourself out of the rut you're in right now... No one here is used to you sounding so depressed... Lash out at someone will ya?

So, with that in mind, let's move the convo forward ----

When's the next one Mike!?

Vader,
Its a bummer to drive to the dyno and not get a pull, but I would have agree, it sounds like Mike made a decision that was in the best interests of EVERYONE there and you are to be commended for your understanding... some people would have gone thought the roof......

Are you saying that that little run through that mudhole caused problems with your truck? For many folks that use their trucks, as trucks, that's a common occurrence.

Good grief, it's a truck, not a piece of Waterford.

Vader,

I commend you on your attitude. Now that you have a little more experience under your belt you can be better prepared. No one likes to work on a dirty truck. The guy under the truck that has to duck mud clumps falling off is going to appreciate that you took the time to clean it before hand. When I am done off road I park in the driveway and put a sprinkler under the truck and water it for a few hours. Do it while the bottom of the truck is still wet and it will get most of the crap. You may have to move the sprinkler a few times to get all the truck clean.
There are off road covers that you can put over a K&N filter that will keep most of the nasties out. Unfortunatly water will still flow through it.

There should be 4 breather lines for your truck. In order from front to rear: Front Differential, Automatic transmission, Transfer case and finally Rear Differential. Find them and extend them to the hight of the bottom of the windows. This will keep the water out. If you ever get stuck in water that deep you are so snafu'ed that it won't matter.
Get some dielectric grease and coat inside every electrical connector in the engine compartment. This will keep water out of the electrics.

I bent the frame on my 1997. Twice! And it was a Lease! You have to pay to play. Expect things to break because they will.

For Vader, who is just about the nicest guy on Earth you'd want to meet, and who took all of this with a great attitude through what was obviously some real disappointment - I want to compliment you on how well you took everything. And trust me, I feel at least as bad as you, and I know that *you* understand our position on this and everything we discussed, and I thank you for it. I hope you will also understand that what I am about to say next is NOT directed to you at all, and is NOT meant to embarrass you. In fact, I was NOT going to get into this, as it's nobody's business - but since a few have just had to shoot off their mouths, I'm going to clear a few things up - and I do NOT want to see others give Vader a hard time over this, either.

Folks, what this gentleman did was to just go out and have some fun, as he saw it - unfortunately the results are not good.

First we inspected the vehicle's underside, and after looking at the back of the rear differential & axle, which at first I had doubts about, I was not going to stop it from being run just on account of that, I was OK with what was left on the bottom of the truck's rear axle. Then we got to looking under the hood, and here is the deal:

1.) This engine was basically submerged and actually ingested at least a small amount of water and fine silt/mud - bit it was not a large amount or the motor would have hydrolocked, of course. This mud residue was down well beyond the air filter element, the BOTTOM of the air intake tract beyond the air filter element had mud residue, clearly showing that at least some water and silt/fine mud had been ingested. The MAF sensor itself was covered with mud to the point that it could not properly seal to the air intake tract and was probably leaking at least some air past it's seal - this part Marc very kindly cleaned on the spot.

2.) The transmission dipstick had mud on it and numerous small pebble-sized mud chunks (or actual pebbles) literally attached to it - that means MUD INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION.

Sometimes people don't understand that just because a vehicle is still running does NOT mean that it's OK to take it to redline who knows how many times it would take (maybe just 1, maybe more) to get the tuning dialed in - but nobody who knows about mechanics would ever have run that vehicle on any dyno even once. Just as another poster quite correctly pointed out, we can just imagine what posts we would be seeing here if we had dyno'd the truck and the tranny or engine had given up the ghost on our dyno, or shortly thereafter, etc. All the Troyer-haters would be rushing in here to proclaim just how stupid *we* were for even allowing the vehicle on the dyno. But then that's fanaticism for you - no matter what you do, there will be a few idiots and/or cowards who will find any way to hate & attack you.

What we have here is a very nice vehicle owner who simply was not aware of the condition of his vehicle or the consequences of his off-road actions - he has been depending on his local Ford dealership to maintain the vehicle, and frankly, I feel they should have checked that vehicle out and told him long ago that he had problems that needed immediate attention - we CANNOT expect every vehicle owner to be an expert!

This gentleman, Vader, is one of the nicest guys you want to meet, and he simply was not aware of what was actually going on deep down *inside* that powertrain - and it was our job to explain it to him, which we did to the best of our ability. It was NOT our intention to humiliate this very nice young man, and I sincerely hope we didn't - frankly, I was in a state of shock, having never seen a tranny dipstick look like that in a powertrain that was still running. At that point, it was our job to point out the problems to him, and try to protect him - that was all we could do.

Vader is a fine young man that we wish nothing but the best for, and that we hated having to disappoint - and I can only hope that we managed some semblance of professionalism in this event.

I'm sitting here on a laptop at the beach reading all these posts and I've finally gotten over it.

Mike you guys were fine...I know it was dumb what I did. Live and learn. You should have seen my wife when I put the intake in the dishwasher.

Tranny looks better since the Jiffy lube flush but I will do the full treatment when I get back.

When I get the nerve I'll make another trek down there.

Disappointed my truck couldn't handle that stuff but whatever.

RP....I'll head over to GD and lash out at someone...

Thanks for parking behind my truck Mark . The way it was running a few months ago, I probably wouldn't have cared, if I could of got enough money from the Insurance company. Hopefully before long, when Mike gets done with it, I will feel the same about the truck as I used to.
