Question Stage I Performance Enhancements

I'm getting ready to start enhancing the performance of my (OK my wife's) SuperCrew. I definitely plan to do the Gibson SweptSide, air intake kit, and SuperChip as part of Stage I. My goals are increased performance (both low and high end) without sacrificing reliability and (please don't laugh) keeping the wife from realizing how much has been done.

I'm also considering the JBA black coated headers. Will these make a significant difference at this level?

What about a MSD 6?

As far as air intakes go, has anyone tried the Volant premium setup? How does it compare with the Airaid et al?

I don't think the MSD box will work with the coil-on-plug setup.

Oops - shoulda thought that out a bit more carefully. I guess I'm just used to tweaking my GMC turbo trucks. What if any worthwhile ignition upgrades are available for the 5.4?

If you want to see the Airaid installed, go to the link at the very bottom of my sig. Same with the Swept Side.

Oh, and it won't work, my wife noticed the exhaust and she keeps finding all the reciepts...

The volant set up is the enclosed air filter right? If so, in theory it should do just as good if not better than the airraid because of the cooler air it will provide. The thing with the airraid,K&N& air force one open air filters is that when you take off from a stop they will suck all that hot air under your hood into the motor. An enclosed system would pull the cooler air from a dead stop.Cool air=dense air= more air molecules into the motor.Hot air= not as dense air= not as many air molecules into the motor.Since the motor is really a glorified air pump one would think the more that you can get into it the better. See where I am going with this? I am sure others will be along to give their 2 cents worth.Good luck keeping these mods hidden from the wife.

Hi Sandman,

The JBA headers are going to add about 15-17 horsepower at the flywheel on your 5.4 motor in that Expedition, either with our wihtout the other mods, so they are always effective, they're just a little bit further down on the "bang-for-the-buck" list due to their expense, but they do always add nice power gains.

You may find that after doing the "Top 3" mods, the Superchip, the airbox kit, and the cat-back exhaust, that the sum total of those 3 changes may well give you as much performance as you desire, of course only time will tell about that in your case, everyone is different.

As was mentioned, I don't think MSD has adapted their DIS-4 unit for the C.O.P. system yet, though they mentioned some months back they were going to do that. For further power gains, enhancing the ignition system isn't very rewarding in these newest vehicles with the coil-on-plug (COP) system, other than having a good fresh set of plugs installed.

Have fun,

Question

What about restrictions at the stock Y pipe or cat - are these signifacant at this level? I know this is not really a computer question but I wanted to make sure to get Mike's input on this

Hey Max - I checked out the Stacker 8 as you suggested and it looks good. Anyone have any experience with it?

It just came out, so, there will not be much feedback on it yet. Summit quoted me $368.39; yes, very high.
