Post Installed and WOW!

I installed my Superchip today using the instructions provided by "Duke" in a previous thread (thanks). I removed the battery and taking my time installation was less than 1 hr. My truck finally will burn the rear tires, now two nice 8 ft. black marks even a chirp going into second gear. Before the chip there wasn't even a sign of burnt rubber. The trans. shift is like it is supposed to be and not a "slush machine" Lots more power! One thing does puzzle me, why didn't my engine ping with 87 octane, there was about two gal left in the tank and I just could not help but try out the new chip before I filled up with Texaco prem. Could this mean that either I had some good 87 octain or maybe my truck can run on 87. I really expected some serious predetonation but there was none. Thank you Mike.

Cool

I'm right with ya Bubbadewsky it sure amazed me. Thanks to Mike @ Performance Parts and Chris @ Superchips (had to do a little soldering on the Comp. Module) I can finally get the performance I was looking for more or less-but a little more is always nice . I got just about the same results on the burn-out from a dead stop and no power brake just foot off brake ped and hit go and about a dual black mark of 6-8'. Did you get that on black top or concrete? Because I cannot get that on concrete. So far the best upgrade for fun factor to date!!

MidniteBlu, This was on blacktop. tried it 5 or 6 times in different places some were on smooth and some were rough pavement and everytime almost the same results. Before the chip it would not spin the tires. I am especially inpressed with the 1st to 2nd shift and the small chirp. I can only guess what a power brake take off would be like---I have not tried this because of the rear disc brakes. I know that could warp the hub on regular rear drums. Kind of reminds me of the improvement that I got years ago when I owned a '70 SCJ-429 Cobra when I installed headers

Dear Bubbadewsky,

The 2000 model-year F-150's tend to have more adjustment range in their knock-sensor systems, so that they can tell the ECU to back off the spark advance enough to eliminate pinging when used with 87 octane. The Superchip still needs to be used only with premium gasoline, as that is how the rated power gains are made, but more importantly, the fuel curves are programmed specifically for the burn rate of higher octane premium gasoline. About half of the 1997 thru 1999 F-150's will ping with anything less than premium in the tank with the Superchip, and the other half still have just enough adjustment range to compensate. So there is a considerable amount of variance in the effective adjustment range of those knock sensor systems. So far, it seems that the majority of the 2000's won't ping on regular, but you still need to use premium of course. You will get better performance than stock even with regular gas, as the improved transmission tuning and the removal of those transitional spark retards will help the vehicle to accelerate quicker. I understand all too well how you were tempted to check it out before filling up with premium.

But just as a reminder to everyone, PLEASE don't use anything less than a good quality premium gasoline with your Superchip, because you could get some detonation, and in rare cases even a driveability problem due to the different burn rate.

I'm glad to hear you're up and running with your new Superchip, by all means have fun and enjoy it!

DARN IT! After reading the posts above (and a few others)..I am one step closer to placing an order with Mike!!!!!!!!

Have any of you with the chip tested your 0-60 times? How is the passing power?

Dustoff-----The performance gain with my Superchip is very evident. It is not something that falls into the category of, well maybe it works. The tranny shift alone is worth the money. The seat of pants acceleration is very noticeable. Some modifications fall into the category of, well I think it runs better. This falls into the category of absolutely. The only problem that I can forsee is since the power is there why not just nail it all the time.

I love my chip, just did a 50 ft burnout today, just before I took my stock tires off. I just wanted to see if I could do it before I put my new tires on.
I tried it with the new tires, but there so much wider, that I only got a little chirp. Now I can use more of the power that the chip gives me around corners, and on curvy roads. Boy those stock tires suck.

Bubbadewsky,

This is what I am looking for..one modification for my truck that will *certainly* be worth the cost. I believe the HP gain is right around 25-27 HP for the 5.4L. Is the fuel limiter (108 mph) removed?

Has anyone with a 99-2000 experienced ANYTHING negative/problems with a superchip?

Still looking for someone to test a chipped 99-2000 supercab with a 5.4L...0-60.

Dustoff------My truck is a 4x4 and my 0-60 times will be slower than a 4x2. I don't think you can get an accurate time with a stop watch, what you really need is 1/4 mile times. Someone surely will have thier truck at a drag strip and will have times with the chip and without. I am sure its alot faster with the chip maybe even as much as a second or more. I think there is a trial period on the chip incase you don't like it, or you could find someone with your computer code and borrow thier chip for a day or so, either way I am sure you will like the results. I took mine to what looks like 115 on the speedometer vs. tachometer and had maybe a little more left, that is way too fast for this large of vehicle, but "If you got it flaunt it" Kind of reminds me of all the Z-71s that used to pass my little Ranger----the tables are turned now

Question

Bubbadewsky,

Did you really get that much difference with the chip? I installed mine after a Flowmaster exaust system, and did not notice a difference off the line. It feels faster acceleration-wise but it won't lay rubber from a dead stop or chirp the tires at the first shift. Maybe Mike has some advice for me.

It's a very common mistake to judge the Superchip by whether or not your particular truck will spin the tires from a dead stop, and here's why:

Some of the heavier vehicles with the worst factory tires will easily spin them, because the tire is so crappy that it's dry traction can easily be overcome; as we can see from posts just in this thread, tires alone can make a big difference in whether or not you can spin them from a standstill. What is far more important is the fact that you can actually feel the vehicle accelerating quicker in virtually every situation, that tells you that the Superchip is working, not whether or not you can spin the tires off the line or chip them on the WOT 1-2 upshift.

This has been discussed here many times, and will always keep coming up, quite naturally. Some guys put the Superchip in their truck, and then can spin the tires where they never could before; and some guys put it in a still can't spin the tires. It all depends on so many factors; the actual weight of these vehicles can vary by almost a ton from the lightest 4X2 V-6 models to the heaviest 139" wheelbase 5.4 4X4's. There are numerous different tires from the factory on all the different 1997 & later F-150 configurations. Between actual vehicle weight and what tires are on the vehicle and their actual tread depth, those factors alone can make all the difference in the world.

The thing to remember here is that we have to have some type of realistic "yardstick" by which to measure the Superchip in each vehicle. So what I tell everyone is that the Superchip is, in round numbers, to be looked at as about a 10%-12% power-gainer. Now, to be able to increase peak horsepower by 10%-12% for roughly a coupla hundred bucks is a *great* bargain. It's next to impossible to find any other low-cost part that actually does as much for the vehicle, but we still have to maintain *reasonable* expectations of what the Superchip can actually do. We can quote power numbers until the cows come home, but I've found the best way to look at the Superchip is as about a 10% power-gainer. It's closer to 12%-13% in these F-150's, but in round numbers, think of it as a 10% power-gainer. If your vehicle's weight & tire "equation" is close enough so that this is all you need to spin the tires on your particular truck, then they will spin. Some vehicles are still too heavy and/or their tires have enough grip so that you still cannot overcome your dry traction, it varies that much between all these F-150's. Then when you factor in vehicle mileage, how many miles on the spark plugs & wires, and all the other variables, it's too much to keep up with. So just think of the Superchip as a 10% power-gainer, and you'll have reasonable expectations of what it can and will do for your particular F-150, in my opinion.

We've seen these vehicles reduce their 0-60 times by anywhere from as litle as 3 tenths to as much as almost a full second, and everything in between. On average, most of these F-150's will knock off about a half-second from their 0-60 & 1/4 mile times. And a good point mentioned earlier is that you can't really time with a stopwatch accurately, you need either drag strip runs with cool-down times in between each run, or maybe a G-Tech unit to do some informal testing. And we've had all those kinds of results posted here many times over the past 14 months or so, and that is what gets reported back here, just so you have some feel for what everyone else seems to be getting. Again, vehicle *configuration* has everything to do with acceleration times. Weight, tires, gearing, etc.

Our bests to all,

Have any of you guys heard about a gizmo called G-TECH-Pro. It looks like a radar detector, plugs into your power point and suction cups to the windshield. The unit measures 0-60, 1/4 mile time & speed, g-force, breaking and horsepower. The thing is not real expensive and may eliminate a lot of second-guessing. Check it out at www.gtechpro.com.

Question

Mike,

As mentioned above by Bubbadewsky..is there a "trial" period on your superchip?

Thanks for your e-mails Mike..they have been very informative.

I might even have 1 or 2 more potential customers for you.. 97 4.6L and a 2000 5.4L like mine. I'll let you know.
