Dear Kenster,
The Superchip can't turn a 5000 lb. truck into a drag strip terror, but what it can realistically do is give you about 12% more peak power. And more importantly at least to me, it increases power *all* the time, not just at WOT (wide-open throttle). It's the single best bang-for-the-buck power gainer you can install on these vehicles short of nitrous, and that is why it is so popular. Most people actually see a small improvement in gas mileage as well, when not using a lot of heavy throttle. This is merely a by-product of the increased spark advance used on part-throttle, so your actual results will depend of course on how you operate your vehicle and your local fuel quality, in terms of it's energy content. Most people report about 1.50-2.0 more mpg when cruising on the highway at steady speeds, for example.
From 1000 rpm on up, regardless of throttle position, there is more power available, so it helps whether you are making a drag strip run, towing, or just driving for groceries. It improves overall driveability noticeably, and if you have an automatic, it vastly improves the shift characteristics, etc.
There is a lot of great information here on the message boards that you can read to inform yourself a bit more about the Superchip from those actually using the product, of course, as you may have already seen. And of course please feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to go over all the specific details of what it can do for your vehicle with you, so you can give it some thought and see if the Superchip might work for what you want to accomplish.
Good luck with your truck,

So what other single mod works best with the chip? I can only afford two mods and the chip is an obvious choice so now I need to decide between a cat-back exhaust or air intake system - any suggestions?
woodzack, get the exhaust system. It improves performance and you'll enjoy the sound just driving around even when you are not running from Dunbarton.

Dear Woodzach,
Excellent question, and a lot of people are in that same situation, having to choose between an airbox elimination kit and a cat-back exhaust system, and there are a couple of ways to approach this.
In terms of the absolute best bang-for-the-buck mod, after the Superchip it's the Airaid or the K&N airbox elimination kit, either one delivers virtually the exact same power gain and cost. They add 12 hp on the 4.6, and 14 hp. on the 5.4. However, this is followed *very* closely by a good cat-back exhaust system, which will usually get you about 10 hp on the 4.6 and about 12 hp on the 5.4 motor. A lot of guys prefer to do the exhaust, like Bill Bateman advised above in his post, as you get to hear that nice V-8 sound, and many people prefer to hear the exhaust before changing the intake, it's personal preference, and a very basic male thing to want to hear that V-8 throbbing.
Just recently, the Dynomax line of exhaust systems has been added to the Digital Marketplace (F150online's store), and the Dynomax Super Turbo cat-back systems are about 1/3 less money than the Gibson or Jardine systems, so if you go with that you may find you can do the intake too, or that you won't have to wait as long to do the intake after doing the exhaust, etc. I'm not sure if you can order the Dynomax online here already, but if not, you can call Roger Lemere, who is the Webmaster's partner in the online store, and he can get it to you if it's not already available in the store. You can get Roger's phone number by going to the F150online store, and looking under alternate ordering methods, the number is there.
The bottom line is that whether you choose to do the intake or the exhaust first, the power gain is very close in either case, with the airbox elimination kit just barely edging out the cat-back exhausts, but only barely. So either one will be fine to do next.
Good luck with your truck!

Your computer code is located on the passenger side door frame, between the door hinges. It is a white sticker with a 4 digit code (i.e. ATC2). You will need this code when you place your order.
I just acquired one and it should arrive in a few days. It just plugs into your main computer.

Thanks Bill and Mike. The fringe benefit of the sound from a good exhaust helps. Also, I'm not sure if the air mods can be applied with CA emissions equipment. I don't think this will be a problem with the exhaust system though. I'll check out the new system Mike and I'll be ordering my chip soon.
Dear Linedog,
Welcome to F150online!
The chip they're talking about in this section is the Superchip. Perhaps the best way to get information about it is directly from those using the product, by reading these message boards, there is a wealth of information here. And please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to give you all the specific details about the Superchip for your vehicle.
In short, the Superchip is a performance chip that reprograms your vehicle's computer for more power, better driveability, much improved automatic transmission shift characteristics, removal of the top speed limiter, etc. It specifically reprograms your engine to take advantage of the increased anti-knock properties of premium gasoline, so it requires the use of premium gasoline. One of the by-products is improved gas mileage in most cases, but this is merely a by-product of the increased spark advance used on part-throttle, so your mileage results will depend on how you operate your vehicle and your local fuel quality. Most people see about 1.5 - 2.0 more mpg when cruising on the highway, and not using a lot of heavy throttle.
That's the "short" explanation of what a Superchip is and what it does. For detailed information regarding ordering, pricing, etc., please contact us privately, our email & phone are below for your convenience.
We hope you'll stick around and hang out with us here on F150online when you have the time, it's a great place to learn about FOMoCO vehicles, and meet new friends too.

Dear Woodzach,
Things like the K&N air filter, and K&N's FIPK kit, which is their airbox elimination kit, *are* in fact CARB-certified for use in California, just so you know. Airaid's airbox elimination kits' CARB number is pending, last I heard, so if it's not already it too, will very soon be CARB-certified.
