I still dont understand why 93 octane will cause more fouling. Ive only heard people on the board state that it will but no explanation. Dunbarton explained to me when I was new to the board that my lower compression engine cant burn all the high octane fuel. If that is true, why do I get better gas mileage on 93 and better performance. I keep thinking my engine is a fluke of nature . But since the 10 year old explorer has run on 93 and nothing else without fouling I have to wonder. Any help?

Cool

Triton46,

I don't now the answer to your questions, but I can hypothesise that your computer has learned to make use of the higher octane fuel over the course of time. Did it make better hp and higher mpg when you first started using premium fuel? Or did it get better over time?

Question

Is the cost per mile more or less with the superchip?
Factor in premuim gas a 20 cents extra per gallon.
Does the increased gas mileage of the superchip offset the premuim gas cost?

A bit more. The way I figure it, I'll be paying about $2 more per fillup. That's assuming a 2 MPG increase and $.20 more for 92 octane.

I can't say if it's worth it yet. I just got my chip last night, and I don't think I'll be able to get it installed this weekend.

Exclamation

After you read this post, remember don't Kill the Messenger attack the Head Mechanic of the Ford Dealership I go to. I am only relaying the information I was told.

I was interested in buying the SuperChip myself and have read all the posts. I still could not decide which way to go. So, I decided to go the Ford Dealership, with all the posts that were on here and ask his professional opinion. The Ford Head Mechanic stated he would put his bet on the Ford Engineers that DESIGNED the truck and engine. He does agree with BIRDDOGG'S first
statement, that if, there is something unique
with this chip, Ford would have given every truck a Superchip instead of modifying the engine.

Bob also stated that under no condition, if, I would modify my truck with any aftermarket
product that involves interferring with the electronics (or any other aftermarket part) and something should go wrong and was not a Ford part, I would have to pay out of my own pocket. He restated Ford would not honor the warranty, I do not know about the rest of you, but, I cannot afford to risk that kind of expense.

I have an airaid, and Gibson Exhaust, but,
I guess I'll have to hide it, if, I go for
warranty service. Same goes with the chip I guess.

I95,

Fortunately your head mechanic has nothing to say about voiding your warranty unless he is a practicing attorney also.

If what he states is his opinion then you have voided your warranty with your ham radio and your linear as they will surely point to this if there is ever any electrical problems whether you have a SuperChip or not.

You know what Clint Eastwood said about opinions, don't you?

I understand your frustrations as my dealer is also not after market oriented.... but he has never stated anything about voiding a warranty.

i asked my dealer about aftermarket performance add-ons, he said as long as i don't exceed the recommended loaded capacity of the vehicle with them, he will be glad to take the warrenty work and bill ford accordingly. so far i have the chip and sal's air system, the air system saved some weight so, i've got about 805lbs to go. Todd,

The truck has always gotten 93, but the other family vehicles (three Explorers and 1 Jeep Cherokee) all started out with 87. All of them began to get worse and worse mpg and pinging, no additives helped. All were moved up to 93 and it was like they were new again.

Triton46,

Well at this point I don't know what to say except use what works for you. Worry about fouling and the other stuff later.

The two main reasons I put a Superchip in my truck are:

The Dealer my Father-in-Law bought his truck from installs Superchips in all light duty pickups (yes, it is a small dealership that survives on customer service). I saw the performance incrrease on his 4x4 with a 4.6.

Mike T's (Superchips_Distributor) information about the Superchip and other performance mods.
