Hi 2002Boss,
Thanks, & glad you called to day to make sure we had your custom program worksheets, etc.!
Izzy,
Just as an aside, I noticed you mentioned doing tranny fluid & filter changes at 100K kilometer intervals (that is, if I understood your post correctly), and that's way too long. 100K kilometers is 62K miles, and the tranny needs a complete fluid flush & change (including draining the torque converter) and filter change **at least** every 30K miles (every 50K Kms. for you). And in any truck that sees any towing or any kind of hard driving like you guys do up there on the street, then we cut that service interval in half, to every 15K miles (or 25K kilometers for you). Just FYI.............
Mountaineermac,
Thanks very much, your support is greatly appreciated!

I don't consider my usage as severe duty as I normally run empty (over 90% of the time). I have only towed once since I bought the truck with 94,000 kms on it and that was a white truck for about 5-10 kms.
Damn crank sensors !!!! Although I do run around with Neal and JMC for a bit on weekends, I figure with the amount of kms I put on the truck in a year (34,000 kms) vs. the kms I put on the truck running the streets with the guys. That the oil isn't getting beat up badly. At the last oil change, the oil was still nice and red, no burnt smell and the pan was clean. Can you tell me where you are getting your information from as I haven't seen anything other than stated above. Or are you going from the experience that you have in the performance segment ??? I am interested in hearing and reading about this as my dealership doesn't change the tranny oil in vehicle often. I am not sure whether that is because no one asks to have it changed or just the interval times for vehicles coming and going with leases and stuff. I know Neal changes his oil every year but I don't have a truck like he does either.
Was it the Accel 300+ spark plug wires that you recommended to me awhile back ??? How do the Bosch spark plug wires compare to the Accel's ??? Canadian Tire has both types and I am looking at a possible tune-up soon. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Mike, I thought the only joke that was in my post was about the white truck.
And yes, I did pull him home that night. This is the only information that I have seen that says otherwise so that is the only information that I can go with. That is until you mentioned your concerns about the oil change interval. Like I said I am not trying to start anything, just trying to get my information straight, that is all.
I want to maintain this truck the best that I can, so when someone like you says a comment like that. It concerns me greatly as I already thought I was doing a good job with my maintenance schedule.
Beastie, thanks for the comment.

Hi IzzyEddy,
No offense intended at all Dean, I really thought you were perhaps joking in some way, it really didn't make any sense to me, hence my response.
It's just widely-known common knowledge that 30K miles has been the normal service interval for changing automatic transmission fluid & filter, and I mean for most vehicles with automatics for many years, not just in these newer trucks. And that is under "normal" conditions, whereas the way a number of people actually use these trucks would be more correctly termed severe service, like street racing, any towing, driving in city traffic, etc. And what we recommend for anyone doing any drag racing or street tracing, or doing modifications for more power, etc. when using a non-synthetic automatic transmission fluid, is to change it every 15K miles. For example, I wouldn't think of going over 8-10K miles with the tranny fluid in our Lightning, whereas our other F-150 automatics can go 15K-30K with our driving conditions.
It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for a document like that to list needing to change manual tranny fluid at 60K miles, but to make absolutely *no* mention of *any* service interval for automatic transmission fluid. Ask anyone in the industry & they'll tell you 30K miles is the normal service interval for automatic transmissions in general, and they'll also tell you that automatics need fluid changes more frequently than a manual transmission does. This is due to the vastly increased heat generated by any automatic transmission as compared to any manual. In the automatic, you've got internal friction materials, where in a manual you don't. Clutches, steels, bands, drums, etc., all see a lot of slippage, which generates far more heat as compared to a manual. So a service document saying change manual tranny fluid at 60K miles but never change the automatic transmission fluid just flies in the face of all logic.
Bear in mind, I have absolutely *NO* doubt that what you're telling us about that service internal info not being there for the auto tranny is indeed exactly what you're seeing there, of course. I don't doubt that at all, I'm just saying that I've never seen such a document, that is dead wrong in my opinion, and I'd never do it.
And for a guy like you, I know that grates on you, as I know you well enough to know just how much time you spend on your truck. Even your friends up there comment to me when we talk on the phone about how it looks brand new & how much time you spend on it, the maintenance it sees, etc. And of course, you and I have talked enough times that I know in general just how well you take care of your truck & home much you care for it.
Which makes this just that much more upsetting to hear, I'm sure, and I would feel the exact same way were I in your shoes.
I don't know what it's like there in Canada, but any Ford dealership service department I've been in over the past, oh, I don't know how many years, has always had service schedules printed in large type on huge posters right there on the walls of the service department. That is just one of many places *I* have seen that information, in addition to the knowledge from racing & modifying vehicles, of course. I have no idea if this may be some weird deal where you guys get different "Canadian-version literature" from Ford perhaps, or if Ford is saying something different down here too as far as what's in the actual owner's manual. Each time we buy a new FoMoCo vehicle, we get the owners manual as well as a separate maintenance booklet in the new car documentation package, and in that maintenance booklet, that lists all the services that needs to be done at whatever intervals. In our maint. booklets for the two 2001 F-150's we have here that have automatics, they both list 30K miles for auto tranny fluid & filter service. So it has to be done at 30K, at 60K, at 90K, 120K & so on. Of course, I rarely bother to read the owner's manual itself thoroughly, so who knows, I may end up with egg on my face with regard to what the owner's manual itself says. Most of this stuff we already do more frequently anyway of course, because the vehicles are modified, or being raced, or doing heavy towing, etc.
But for the life of me, I don't ever remember seeing any service schedule saying to change manual tranny fluid at *any* interval, be it 60K or 150K miles, yet not make any mention at all of any service for the automatic transmission. That just astounds me, and nothing will ever make me accept, abide by, or recommend that to anyone else.
At any rate, as you can probably see by now, this really isn't appropriate to sit hashing over in this section (and others are probably thinking I'm nuts by now), spending an hour trying to type our a proper detailed response to that kind of post, so it's one of those things that, like anything detailed, should really be gone over via phone instead of typing out here, another reason for my original response.
By all means, if you'd like to discuss this a bit do feel free to call me whenever you get a chance Dean, if you'd like to go over all of this in detail with you, and answer any additional questions, etc. Actually, there are some things I'd like to go over with you specifically about aspects of the color of the fluid and using fluid color to diagnose fluid viability, etc.
Thanks for your post Dean, give me a call if you get time & have a great weekend!

Hi JMC,
Thanks.
While we like to think we know what we're doing, there are a number of people (such as yourself, Neal, & so many others over the years) that also contribute to the overall knowledge base on these vehicles, with one modification or another, or with one bit of information or another, etc. You've certainly contributed a good amount of knowledge in various areas on this platform, and have given us feedback as well, for example, on our electric fan kit with the way you use your vehicle, etc.
In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, one of the FAQ's we want to put up regards some data you were kind enough to put together some time ago, which was all the various speedo teeth numbers for all the various factory options, tire sizes, gear ratios, model years, etc. for the late-model F-150. At one time, you graciously faxed that info down to us, and God only knows where I put it all those months ago. So no doubt you'll probably be hearing from me soon with a request for that info again.
Thanks for your post & have a great weekend!

Mike, I appreciate your response as like I said this is the only information that I have from the truck. I gave the book to JMC and he looked it through as well under normal service and there was no mentioned about changing the tranny oil for the automatic. When I had my '87 300 I-6 4 spd, I asked about a tranny oil change and the dealer that I go to said that he doesn't remember someone every asking for one. It could be that it is a rural dealer and a lot of the owners do their own oil changes, like Neal does.
I am busy with a friend's wedding this weekend so I hope the weekend goes well. I have some travelling to do on Monday and Tuesday for work. I will try and call on Thursday or Friday to discuss this further. Again Mike, thanks for your comments.

Mike,
No word of a lie, there is no mention of an Automatic transmission oil change. I read it twice. My manual has the oil change recommendation every 30,000. I suspect the Canadian market was different. My father-in-law was one of those; add oil when it was low types. Ironic, I just changed the oil in my manual tranny last week. 3rd time in 105,00 km.
Dean,
Maybe that is why your compression is so low, time for a tranny oil change. :rofl
