ford esp

Currenly waiting for my truck to arrive but am kicking around the idea of adding the extended care or maintainence package. Do any of you have any experience and is it worth the extra cost?

Thanks J

The first question would be do you plan on keeping the truck past the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty?

For me I do plan on keeping mine past that time so I felt is was worth having the extended warranty if for nothing more just piece of mind. I bought the PreimumCARE Ford ESP, 6yr/75,000 miles, $100 deductable it covers the most and I believe it cost me about $1,260.00. Now I didn't buy mine for a little over a year after I had my truck and it had over 12,000 miles on it so it was an extra $100 for me since I had waited.

So if you wanted to you could wait and see how you feel about it and buy it later. When I bought mine I am paying monthly payments on it for 18 months, no interest, so its not such a big hit in the pocket up front. The other good thing about it is it has free car rental for 1 week if they have to keep your truck for more then a day for repairs if it was needed.

I got the ESP, the whole nine yards. It was worth having ALL myregular scheduled maintence paid for for 50,000 miles! THAT alone was worth it. I have a V-10.

I never buy ESP's. But now since I get older & wiser....or maybe just older...I think my next truck I will get the ESP. I usually don't keep my truck's more than 3 years, but I put on about 25,000 mile's per year. It's nice to CYA !

Another thing I forgot to mention is that a Ford ESP can be transfered to another buyer if you ever decide to sale your truck privately. Not sure of the cost to transfer, like $50.00 but it's a good sales point.

If you do get it and trade your truck in and there is still some years or miles left you can also get a partial refund on the ESP for any unused portion, could be some good money, or just a little.

With the cost of parts and repairs now days I think its something good to have, for "just in case".

I paid $1675 for 6yr/100k mile Premium Care warranty ($50 deductible) since I intend to keep the truck a long time. I purchased it just before the original 36k mile was up so I paid the extra $100. I have full faith in the drivetrain on this truck, yet at 60k miles I'm about even with 40k to go. I've had a few smaller things go and customer service has been great because of it. A coil here, instrument cluster there, ball joints and wheel hubs too. It all adds up very quickly in both parts and labor. Check out www.fordesp.com for the best prices.

Thumbs up

My 6/75 paid for a new pinion seal, and replaced the doors and tailgate. For a grand total of $150 out of my pocket. I think it paid for itself? Well, I paid for it to begin with, but it was nice to get the money back as repairs to the truck. It's well worth it, IMO!,,,,98

Here is a heavy thought. A wise man (my father) once told me to "only insure what you can not afford to lose" and an extended warranty is nothing more than insurance. The insurance company knows the average frequency of failures and the cost of repair. Your premium covers those costs but they also cover the salaries and profits (and lawsuits) of the insurance company. Unless a failed transmission or worn ball joint would DESTROY you financially, you would be better off to just put your $1200 - $1600 in a CD account and use it for any emergencies or repairs that come up. You might end up paying more but you will most likely end up paying less. The exception to this would be if you know that you abuse your truck and expect it to break much more often than the average truck.

Just someting to think about the next time the sales clerk at Best Buy tries to sell you an extended warranty on a toaster!

I never buy a warranty for anything that costs less than a certain amount of money, say $1000? I always tell the Best Buy guys to go take a flying leap. When you're talking about something that costs 20 grand and up, why not buy a warranty?? If you're making $250-$400 payments, a blown tranny or engine could break you! Not if you're independently wealthy, and just happen to like Ford trucks.,,,,98

If anyone is truly interested, these guys have given me the lowest quote so far on my 03 Expedition. They beat the previous link above by about $200.

I bought my 97 used two years ago and got a 3 yr 36,000 ESP. Let me tell ya it has been worth every penny. It covered some engine and tranny work totaling close to 5K just in one visit. It has also provided me with free oil/filter changes at the dealership during the warranty. There have also been odds and ends that it has covered as well. Like has been mentioned before buying something cheap from best buy definitely not but spending money on a truck that is your daily driver, the extra insurance is worth it. I also have had a rental car paid for by Ford every time the thing has been in.
I give it a thumbs up

Someone posted a while back about a dealer in Texas I think that offers the ESP at a discounted price. I used them for a quote and was able to get my local dealer to hoor that price. If anyone remembers who that dealer was would be helpful. Or you can try a searchf or it.

A little story about ESP...

Wayyyy back in 1988 my parents bought one of the worse cars ever made, a Mercury Sable with the dreaded 3.8. Normally they never bought ESPs but since the car was soo new they decided it might be prudent.

Well just after about 40K miles here is what was replaced with a 50 deductable (per instance):

-Heads and cooling system
-Tranny
-fuel injectors
-engine
-air pump
-alternator

and there were a few more that I cannot remember off the top of my head. I understand where Infernal Combustion is coming from, but sometimes you draw the "A" card when you buy a vehcile and you end up with an ultra turd (that conviently does not go under the Lemon law since diff parts keep breaking down).

I like to think of ESP as a gamble. Or even better as murphy's law. If you get the 100,000 ESP, then your vehicle will run perfectly all the way to 100,00; if not......(you get the picture).

I work for Cisco and I get the X-plan pricing, but now I see from the above posts that I still got the royal shaftola. I paid about 1500 for a 6 year 75K with a 50 deductable. Damnit!
