I HVE THE TRUE ANSWER
I am going to run 80W90 gear oil in my 4.6, and never turn it off.....then, I'll have great protection, and no start-up worries....wow
All these posts are silly...Ford is not goint to void a warranty over engien oil grade (not weight - there is no such thing)., especially when their own dealerships are using and recommending 5w30 instead of 5w20......

OK, first I will respond to the previous question regarding Amway vs. Mobil 1. Consumer Reports did a study on oils a few years back and determined that there is no difference in engine wear when oil is changed at regular intervals (3000-5000 miles) regardless of the type of oil you are using.
To keep it simple, buy the $1.98/ qt stuff instead of the $5.00/ qt stuff.
My next question to everybody.....we will never know the truth behind the 5w-30 vs. 5w-20 unless one of the Ford engineers that made that decision posts here, but it makes sense to me that with the viscosity breakdown and the 10w-XX vs. 5w-XX that it is posible that somebody decided the damage done with 5w-20 is less than the damage with 5w-30 due to breakdown and the damage done with 5w-20 is less than the damage done with 10w-30 due to cold starts?
Does this make sense to anybody else? Just a educated guess with all of the facts that I have reviewed...considering I have no data on actual engine wear.

Unfortunately it's not a perfect science. I've seen guys that are so meticulous and treat their vehicles like a baby, doing all the proper maintenance etc, only to throw a bearing after the warranty has run out. Then you have the guy who does very poor maintenance and uses the cheapest oil he can get, going well past the recommended drain intervals and abuses the heck out of his engine, without ever having a problem. Who can figure?

Yup...kind of like the Trooper I owned before my F150. Couldn't kill it no matter what I did to it.

Here's the REAL and CORRECT FINAL answer!
After I got my truck I attended a new owner clinic along with about 40 others. While the shop mgr was explaining the mechanicals to us, I asked about the 5w-20 vs 5w-30. He said the ONLY reason that oil spec was recommended was due to CAFE (gas mileage) issues. Internal engine specs were not changed. I quantified that my warranty would be valid if I used 5w-30 and he said the warranty would not change just by using 5w-30 oil. He also said when they do oil changes, they have 5w-20, but could also put in 5w-30 if someone wanted them too.
Bottom line is its nothing to worry about like I figured.

WHOAAAAAAA THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does having a PhD have to do with anything??????????
I HAVE a PhD and a SCREW 4x4, but I don't have anything else to BRAG about - NO Harley, NO King Ranch, NO anything else.
I guess I don't get the connection....
Why do some people think a PhD makes a person different or rich or whatever???????????
I have a job (I teach at a community college) and play ball with my son, just like any other guy.....give me a break!!!!!!
