Full Detail & Paint Correction Black 2007 Mustang GT

Hey All!

I finally purchased a Mustang GT back over the summer - a car I have wanted forever. I decided on the 2005-09 body style as I loved it back in middle school when it debuted and being financially debt averse - I wanted no payments.

Beautiful car, low mileage (71,900), and nearly all stock. I bought from a long term owner in South Carolina after posting a WTB post on a local Mustang page.

She is clean, but needed some paint correction. Long story short, this car has soft paint. Meaning it marrs super easy when trying to polish it out. After going through 6-7 different polishes after compounding, I finally had success with Menzerna SF-3500.

3 weeks of pulling my hair out, paid off. I'm glad I posted on Autogeek as I received some great advise. Ultimately an older post from a guy with a Scat Pack Challenger dealing with the same issue, steered me towards the Menzerna.

I had previously tried:

Meguiars Ultimate Polish, M205, M210
Chemical Guys V34, V36
Adam's Finishing Polish

Changed Pads - hard pad, soft pad, in-between pad. Nothing worked.

Process:

- 2 Bucket Method Wash (always)
- Clay Meguiars Mild Clay
- Ultimate Compound on Adam's Blue Pad
- Wipe down with Car Pro Eraser
- After Much trial and error - Menzerna SF-3500 on Black Chemical Guy's Hex Logic Pad
- Wipe down with Car Pro Eraser
- Poorboy's Black Hole for deep close - paint was corrected and swirl free
- Collinite 845 Insulator Wax
- Topped with Duragloss Aquawax

Looks great John but maybe you need to get a life! Also, you should not park it next to that run down old 2004 F150.

And now begins your never-ending battle with black paint.....😂

Hahaha oh yes should be fun. Only a little hair loss :lol

Those are OEM 2010-2012 Forged GT500 19's. My dream wheels for these cars.

I love the body on these and the interior. I put the same Alpine ILX-207 Head Unit in it, backup camera, sirus etc and now it's got everything I need.

...ETC...
Pretty Mustang there. We bought an '08, Dark Candy Apple Red. I notice the shifter, ever hit your funny bone on the console lid forward edge coming from 1st to 2nd or from 3rd to 4th? I did, it hurt, I fixed it with an extension, yet throw is still shorter than OEM. Never heard about soft paint, is that just a black car issue?

"Pretty truck" too.

Thank you Tbear!

Mine has a Hurst competition short throw shifter installed by the previous owner, so no issues I have had with hitting the console.

The soft paint means the clearcoat marrs easily. It took an incredibly fine polish and soft pad to be able to remove any swirls. Paint typically is somewhere between hard and soft. Tesla is notorious soft paint. Corvettes (with he exception of the new C8) are notoriously rock hard and harder to correct imperfections.

My car, for whatever reason, is very soft and requires extra care to avoid the micro-marrs.

Your car looks great. Black is really hard to maintain. Try to invest also on how to properly maintain it by researching on a good pressure washer, foam cannon, and car wash tools like a bucket with dolly trays etc etc...

Thank you! I actually do much of that already, it was just the super finicky paint that made it so difficult. Many washes later using the 2 bucket method as always, and she still looks amazing.

Was showing my Wife your Mustang, we both were very impressed with it, the black looks so wet. Was Wife that said to put hers (ours) "up there", so here goes.

Thank you Tbear! Yours looks beautiful as well. I just love these 2005-09's. Really has been a joy owning mine so far. The little pony on the side stripe is a nice touch.
