Headlights

I got a pair of Harley headlights today and the driver side has a nice little scuff mark on it. I was reading some threads that are a bit dated regarding headlight restoration. The lights themselves look pretty decent as far as clearness goes..... just the darn scuff mark looks bad.

So... the question is.... Are you guys still suggesting PlastX or has something new become available?

I'd do some research on the topic and pick your own poison. I'm about to restore the HL on my wife's car. My attempt will include:

- wetsanding
- M105 with a cutting pad
- M205 with a finishing pad
- THEN some Plast-X

I think I'm gonna hit up my former employer (garage/salvage yard...free or cheap) for a test light before I try anything on the Harleys. If it works... he can re-sell it

For a scuff mark, I'm not sure these would need wet sanding... I dunno

You're right....I think sanding is better for discoloration, etc. For a scuff....some polish and/or PlastX might be best.

That's where I'm going to start. I tried to takes some pics for here but the batteries in my faithful camera has had enough.

If the scuff ends up being deeper than I think, I'll have to get more aggressive.

Let us know how it turns out. This thread is interesting considering I'm about to restore some lights myself. I'll post some before and after pics.

Least aggressive first - start with PlastX on a foam pad with a rotary, you can even use an electric drill. If that doesn't cut it, then go to Ultimate Compound. Wetsanding will cut anything if it's stubborn.

Buy some cheapos offline and swap the lenses

I'd start out with a little PlastX on a MF towel by hand, and see what it does, if that doesn't get you to where you want to be, then step up a little from there.

I did this in less than 10 minutes (taping time included) with the following process:

Meg's 105 on a cutting pad on a Flex
Meg's 205 on a finish pad with a Flex
PlastX

Gipraw... what a difference! I haven't had much time to mess with the lights I got last week but I did (didn't expect much) use some Dupont #7 polishing compound on the scuffed area, but not much improvement. The scuff mark seems to more than just a surface scuff so some wet sanding will be necessary. I am away from home till Friday, so I am hoping to get to them this weekend
