Question ?'s on waxing

I'm wanting to put some wax on my truck the next time I was it this week. It was built on 11/99, so is this enough time so I can wax it? I plan on waxing it with Turtle wax emerald series.

Thanks

No reason not to wax your truck at this time. I must offer that I hate Turtle wax, it seems to leave a greasy film on the paint. I use Meguires wax, Eagle One is also a great polish to use.

If you really want a good shine, polish first, then wax. Eagle One is safe for clearcoats....

Fake.
You might also want to "clay" the finish before the polish and wax. The clay will remove any contaminants that have landed on the paint and leave it smooth as glass, the polish will give you a deep shine and the wax will help protect the whole thing.

I'm not sure what you mean by "type" but here goes.
There's several different "brands", you might want to stick to the more familiar names like: Meguiar's, Clay Magic, Granitize, etc.
There's generaly only one "grade" of clay bar available at Retail stores, if you want different grades you'll have to go to an automotive paint store, but it probably won't be necessary.
BTW. Any advice you get here on which wax to use will of course be more than slightly slanted, if you want a completely unbiased opinion check out Consumer Reports, they test waxes every now and then; the results will surprise you.

Good luck.

You have mentioned TSB's a couple of places on the clay bars. Can you provide more information about this? Even the dealer's body shop locally is using it.

I have to say that I agree with Indyfan about Turtle Wax products. Selection is, of course, your choice and preference, but I think you'd be really happy with the results you get from a higher grade product such as Meguiar's, Mother's, 3M, and so on.

As far as clay bars are concerned, be sure it is an automotive detailing clay you are using. I'm not implying you are dumb at all. Before I got really into waxing, I'd have thought folks meant modeling clay that you get for your kids! I have used a clay bar on my vehicles with excellent results...it makes the paint smooth as glass.

Today's automotive finishes can be waxed immediately. Depending upon what part of the country you live in and the exposure to sunlight, you may have to wax more or less frequently. Try the website www.meguiars.com They have a lot of excellent info there and they have a free car care prescription that tells you about how to care for your car based on info you supply. Good luck!!

Fake. Yes, you should use the clay the first time, your truck spent some time outside a factory in a major industrial area as well as spending some time on a train. Chances are the dealer only washed it.

Beechkid. I've also been using clay on several cars for over 2 years now and haven't seen any adverse effects on the paint. What kind of problems does the TSB mention?

Mel. Yes you can apply a second coat of wax, but it will only take if you wait for the first coat to harden, usually about a day or so. BTW a second coat will only marginally improve the effectiveness of the wax.

Question

I must also add IMO that I don't like Turtle Wax. I use Zymoil, it is 100% pure carnuba wax (no petrolium products). Go ahead and wax your truck. I also have a question, but for clay bars. Should I use the blue "Play-Do" or the green

Just kidding (a little humour), I thought that the clay bars where for damaged paint (paint fumes, staines etc..) I use a liquid pre-wax cleaner that is meant to take off previous waxes or grime, acid rain etc...

Should I use a clay bar for this spring (after a tough, cold and salty road grimed winter). You guys say that the shine was greatly improved... But did this weeken the clear coat, do you have to wax every weekend to keep the shine? And did you use it on the painted plastic parts like the mirrors or the bumper covers?

thanks
