paint problems

i was just wondering if anyone else has had problems with their paint. i have a 2001 f-150 that i love to death. however, the paint on the roof of my truck is chipping and peeling off. it has been doing this for about a year. the dealerships and ford motor co. keep telling me that they wont cover it. isn's that a bunch of crap? i will have to send pictures, but it really is a ahame that at three years old, the paint is done. any help with the matter, or even some advice would really be appreciated.
thanks,
steve

Not sure what to tell you man.

Even at 4+ years old, you shouldn't be experiencing this type of problem.

Did you buy it used? New?

Have you tried multiple dealerships? Can you post pictures?

What kinds of chemicals have you dumped into your windshield washer reservoir? I see cars all the time with peeling race stripes across the roof.

we have a 2001 explorer sport black. We just discovered that there are places on the roof that have started peeling up. It is all layers of the paint and appears to be down to the metal. There are a few bad areas that you can look from the front of the truck and see the corners that have peeled up. Upon further inspection, there are tiny hairling cracks ALL OVER the roof. About to take it into dealer on Friday. Have to see what they say. Was just searching in here to see if anyone else had problems.

here goes the ford paint problem again

Steve, I have a 90 f150, approx early 1991 I noticed while waxing my truck (the truck is blue) my wax pad and my cloth were turning blue. I wax my vehicles 2x yearly. The local papers just happened to run a column in the editorial section about f150 trucks with the same problem. Turns out that Ford knew of the problem and didnt say a thing, they were waiting for the owners to pitch a fit. Well I did and I got a new paint job out of the bullcrap. They were using the wrong primer from what I was told, so there u go

Hey TG...

I really think that what you're experiencing is normal. Odds are that the wax that you've utilized is slightly agressive on the cleaning scales and thus, what you're experiencing is the result of what's known as 'single stage painting'.

In short, your paint may not have a clear-coat on top of the paint. I believe that this painting process was utilized up until the late 80's or so and it involves applying multiple layers of pigmented paints on the painted surfaces. No clear-coat (clear paint) was applied to the top of the paint.

This was a very common painting style back before some of the more modern types of painted surface finishing products.

I'm having the same issue. My truck is a 2001 model and is painted white. There looks to be a different rubbery type paint on the top of these vehicles. I think water is standing in the ridges on top and eventually causing the paint to crack and peal. Are others having this problem too?

Yeah, this really is a shame. If your dealer or Ford won't do anything for you, then you don't have many options... let it go, or get it re-painted.

I just had my roof repainted under warranty for cracking paint in the rain gutters..Ford uses a product from 3M, its like a filler that hardens. It is in the gutters covering up the welds from the roof to the top sides..As time goes by it begins to expand and contract, thus causing your paint to crack..Now in several years it will do it again, atleast it will be warrantied for as long as I own the truck..
