Herculiner experience
Friends,
Does anyone know if the "Herculiner" cracks under xteme heat due to expansion and contraction of the bed surface? The reason I ask is because it can get quite hot here in Texas.

I've just found a Rhino dealer who'll do it for $325 on my 5.5 ft. bed 2001 SuperCrew. I've had excellent results with Rhino my 96 crewcab. I abuse the hell out of the bed and have had no chips or tears in 93K miles. What I haven't seen here yet is someone who's used the Herculiner long term. If the Rhino does go bad they fix it for free lifetime. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to save a $225, but I am pretty sure, as a result of my experience with my 3/4 CC, that the Rhino will hold up. I am going to check this Rhino dealers shop out this afternoon. Another reason for me to use Rhino is there would be a pretty good chance that while roughing up the paint IN the bed I'd loose concentration and do the OUTside of the bed too.
For you guys going the Herculiner way it might help to get sanding whips for your drill motor rather than manually scotching it. The pictures provided here of the Herculiner installation do look just like the Rhino, real nice. It will probably prove to be the way to go in the future.

I have had the Herculiner on for several months now, and overall I am impressed with it. I do have one suggestion to anyone thinking about this applying this product. When scuffing the bed with the scotchbrite pad, when you think that it is roughed up enough, go over the bed again. A sanding attachment for a drill or something similar would be ideal. On my bed, there are several places where the power washer at the carwash has apparently washed off the Herculiner off. I am sure this is due to the paint not being scuffed enough and the product not forming a good bond with the metal. I am going to wirebrush these areas in the next few weeks and reapply to see how that holds up.
You have to be very meticoulus <sp?> when you do this project. The sanding whip sounds like a good idea, I would have tried it had I thought of it. You will surely need more scotch brite pads than what they give you if you go that route. I did put a small nick about the size of a pencil lead in mine, not sure how I did it. If you constantly haul heavy or sharp objects in your bed I would recommend a spray-in, if you are an occasional bed user the Herculiner will work well.

A friend of mine currentlt has the Herculiner in his truck. His only complaint is that the liner is starting to turn a chalky white color. Almost like it is fading. Other than that he is pleased with the durability.....not coming off at all. BTW....I have the LineX liner in my truck.....very pleased with it also.
Yes they all do that chaulking thing even Rhinoliner. Rhinoliner sells a conditioner that brings the black gloss back out. It works just as well on Herculiner as they are all the same polyurethane material.
I just had two of our work trucks done by the Rhinoliner dealer. Only comment I have is that my Herculiner is a little thinner overall. But all in all they look awfully close when done right.
Here is a picture of a fresh Rhinoliner job:

All Spray-on/Herculiner(etc.)fans,
What happened to good "old fashioned" Bed liners?? Personally, I think the Herculiner, rhino, etc. look nicer than a Bed-liner, but I haven't known one yet that can stand up to what the "old fashioned" bedliners can. Now I've never had a spray/roll on liner, but I have been told that some of them get tacky(gooey) in the summer's heat. On the other hand, I've been told that they are very durable until they get some age/wear on them. Finally, I don't see how they can protect against dents to the bed--they are not hard plastic like the "real" liners. I carry my 4-wheeler(which is for sale by the way) in my truck, and the winch plate bumps into the "front" of the bed (behind the back glass). I had to carry it back there once b-fore I got my liner, and I had 2 small dents in the bed when I took it out. Anyway, I was just wondering why no one likes the "old fashioned" (hard) liners anymore?; but these liners are the only ones I will buy.

FYI, Even though I've had good results with Rhino I went ahead with the Herculiner about 3 weeks or so ago....
Hauled brush and logs in it a couple of weeks ago with no chipping or wearing off. I did sand the hell out of the bed though. Sanded it 'til I was beat and came back later for more. I probably spent four or five hours and this mainly using whips on a drill motor. I think with the chemicals it ran about $120 to do the job, looks real nice.

Just a couple quick comments....
Mr. I Love Plastic Drop In Liners.....
Have you ever taken your plastic liner out and looked at your bed? A plastic liner will rub your paint right off, even if you never put anything in your bed.
Score 1 for ANY spray in.
Which can then lead to rust.
Score 2-0, spray/roll in.
I have had plastic liners in my past three trucks, and every time I would say, if I only had the $$ for a spray in. Well, I still don't, but Herculiner came pretty darn close, at a third of the price. It may even be cheaper than the plastic ones, not sure. Question is this, what are you putting in your bed that will dent it!?
To all, enjoy your bed <eerrr> liner, no matter what kind it is!
And to Mr. I Hate Mopar....... I always swore that it meant, Move Over People Are Racing!! But I could be wrong, I have been before!!
Take care all,
Neal Coppola
