I don't know what size Hella 700's are, but I remember reading that a 7" light was about max for the '99-'03 grill. I'm thinking the '97-'98 grills are a little smaller than the '99-'03 grills ...

The grilles are, yes- but the header panel, which is ultimately what lights are mounted to and aimed from, are the same size.

Fairlaner: This is a great writeup and follow up answering all questions. Thank You. i am new to the forum and working on my 1997 F-150 XL auto 4.2L V6. i really like the subtle look of the fog lights but cannot copy it for my truck because the grill is different. It is not honeycomb but rectangular boxes.

So you are using factory switch but getting the power from the battery to relays/fog lights. Correct?

Thanks!

No reason you can't put the lights on a '97-'98 w/ the diamond mesh grill. While the grill opening is a little smaller, everything behind the grill is exactly the same as the '99-'03.

I basically used the harness supplied w/ the Hella 500 lights, but instead of using their switch, I used a factory fog light switch. I actually just added factory fog lights to my truck, so I'm currently looking for a new way to switch the grill lights.

The reason I cannot use it because it will not look as good as it does on your truck because of the design of the grill, plus, it will hinder the light.

Thanks for the clarification on the wiring. Once I get my switch w/fog lights, I plan on doing the same wiring with aftermarket lights. I like your attention to details and clean setup.

Thanks

Edit: Here is the pic I just got of the back with the wires

From what I can see the wires are as follows: (Looking down at back of plugs after pulling from dash and bending light switch to face floor)

Hate to bring back an old thread but i finally found a working headlight switch with with foglights. My truck came from the factory with the wiring harness just no lights or switch. I have like this person, 5 wires, do i still need to splice wires and if so which ones to get my fogs running with the parking lights?

From my '99 headlight switch mod write up ...

The second part of the mod consists of connecting a wire between the white w/ black stripe wire (comes out of the small gray plug) and the brown wire (comes out of the larger gray plug). This powers the foglight switch whenever the parking lights are on.
