Probably sand, or at least scuff it. Paint doesn't like to stick to chrome very much (same goes for grilles, bumpers, etc.)

Some of the krylon paints say no sanding needed, but why take the chance? Just scuff it up some and dont worry about it. The last thing you want to do is have to re-open the lights and redo it

Holy JMJ, if anyone did this without deforming some of the plastic I am impressed!! Lucky for me, the deformed part is hidden.

Any suggestions on how to get out the rest of the old silcon?

Heres some ebay Lightning heads I took apart and painted. I also painted the trim on the inside so i wouldnt have that clear trim around the corner light..The extra step made a HUGE difference.

Did mine

I did mine today, one side I had to put in the oven 3 times, the other side only two time. I did the oven on 260, worked great. A little tip, I used a small tip flat head screw driver to run under the left over silcone. Had no problem, putting back together tonight, can wait to put them on my truck in the morning.https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...ront-truck.jpg

I am attempting this mod right now. So far I'm on my 3rd reheat but it's all good. I'm being slow and cautious. I'll post pics if I am successful. I'll also post pics if I'm not successful since I'm new.

Headlight mod done. It was a lot of work. Not hard, but not my comfort zone. Thanks to the many contributors to this, without y'all I wouldn't have succeeded. The only think that I wish I had done different was to mask the reflector except the edges. I didn't intend to ever nightshade the entire reflector, and sanding it off after the fact was a booger. Without further ado:

I'm going to try this on my 2010 when I get a chance. There isn't as much to paint, but I'm doing what I can to rid my truck of chrome. Do you suppose the rear lights come apart similar to the front lights?

Just started doing this earlier today. took me a good hour and a half to get the 1st lens separated..used a heat gun the whole time rather than cooking it. definitely not easy but as long as youre patient its alright. going to get paint over the wknd, just trying to decide on what to use..glossy, satin or matte?? anyone think it makes a whole lot of difference?

Anyone have a brand of the type of silicone they used, I have some ISO pure silicone in a black and blue tube that we use at work, just wondered if that would work. Its clear also.

just finished up this weekend. followed the steps to the T and it worked out wonderfully...anyone attempting this, just be PATIENT. Getting the headlight apart will take some time, and you WILL deform a lil bit of the black housing (mostly the clips) but not to worry you will not see that. I used gloss black and through the lens it ALMOST looks PTM. Another good trick is to pick up some of the long Duct zip ties (like 2 or 3 feet long). when reassembling the lens lay a rag or two over the clear part and zip tie the heck out of them...worked great for me. Thanks to the OP for the directions!
