I have 06 f150 with chrome trim but I want to change it to black, would I be better of to buy a new trim package or take the chrome off and paint it? If paint it what paint should I use??

I always wanted to try black chrome. There is a product out there but I have no idea how it would stand up over time .

What pieces are you talking about? Interior trim, the bumpers, what?

Okay, chrome bumpers need to be sand blasted to completely remove ALL of the chrome to be done properly. Some say otherwise, but it's not something I'd want to do twice when it peels. Most shops won't warranty paint on chrome. Another option is getting painted bumpers from a junk yard or Rock Auto and painting those.

If there is chrome on your mirrors or door handles, it is not factory chrome, but cheap aftermarket stick-on stuff that you can remove. If the grill is just the surround, that's plastic chrome that can be sanded off and painted. If the grill itself is chrome, that's also not factory and can be removed.

Pics would help to be certain.

All of the plastics aside of windshield wiper cowl, and rear bumper step pad have been removed, smooth sanded and properly shop painted & cleared to match. Chrome bumpers were removed and sold off and I used non OEM primed bumper skins and had them painted in the same fashion. I intended to keep some chrome accenting, so I retained the chrome pull levers on handles, swapped to the thinner OEM step boards ( took forever to find used ), and bought hte Harley Davidson edition grill.

I wasted too much money in this truck but it looks great with a ton of mods. IF you have a couple grand, so for the paint match work if you intend to keep it for a long time. I am glad it is painted up.

Painted handles with chrome pull handles.

Fully painted mirrors ( swapped my chrome cap covers with a friend ). Also the glossy b-pillar covers from eBay.

Yea that seem alittle out of my price range although your truck looks mint!! I can't see spending that much, I was looking at plastidiping the chrome but I don't know the proper procedure

I disagree with the sandblasting. I took a powersander to my chrome bumper and 20 minutes later painted it with Rustoleum Bedliner, after a coat of self etching primer, and than a coat of black primer, then 4 coats of the bedliner. Came out great, no issues.

^ But how long has it been on? Longevity is the issue, like 5 years afterwards. There's a reason why many shops flat refuse to paint over chrome, or will and won't warranty the work.

I powdercoated gloss black my rear bumper. Cost like 120.00. It's not a perfect match to the UA black, but it's so close you can't tell. I have a body kit attached to it, and you really can't tell the difference between the two:

It's a cheap way to do it as long as you don't need the color to blend perfectly.

How long have you had that and has it held up well to fading? Cause I've certainly thought about that route. My Oxford White is super easy to match and that would keep me from having to buy both bumpers.

Being that it's the rear bumper and it's not a body panel, I think it works better.

I've had it on about a year now and it's held up very well. I also put polish on it to protect it every few months. It's definitely stronger than the paint.

So does it just pull off? Mine has chrome on just the handle part & I don't like it.
