HID Help! 2005 Supercrew

What's up everyone? First off, I'm glad to be on these forums! I've gotten a lot of usefull information from this site!

Now here's my problem... I have ordered some new projector headlights for my F150 but I want HIDs as well! My question is... Can I just buy a blub to replace the facory bulbs? Or do I have to get one of these "HID kits"? What is the point of a HID kit?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Here's a link to the headlights I ordered... And I would like to have 6000K HIDs

Thanks!

a true hid kit is the bulbs and ballasts that run them. hids are ALOT brighter and have alot better color. people try to sell halogen style bulbs with xenon gas in them to appear more whiteish/blue but they suck. 6000k is still pretty bright. if you want hids make sure you get two bulbs and two ballast and warranty would be nice. you get what you pay for with these things. just make sure you use the right and bulb size and 35W is plenty enough, with 55W you'll need but some ceramic plugs

Hi there! Give this a quick once over (I created it with you in mind ):

Halogens & HIDs

Option #1: Since you are switching to a split-bulb design, you can no longer retain your 9008 headlights. It looks like the high beam reflector is a 55W H3 type bulb (relatively small bulb, mostly used in small fog light housings) so you won't be getting much of a great high-beam. I'm not sure what the low-beam projector uses, but yes you can do one of two options:

#1.) Upgrade the halogen bulb (many different models if you want brighter light or a different color).

#2.) Go for an HID swap. More luminous output but since that projector is designed for halogens, it will be scattered a lot worse. A Xenon bulb uses the bulb, to AMP connectors which run to a ballast, and from the ballast (generally) to a harness, which prevents from cooking your stock wiring system. Pretty straightforward if you know how to read directions. 6000K is a good color- white with a hint of blue (depending on manufacturer and salt content). 35W is plenty bright (about 2000 lumens) 55W will just annoy drivers since the housing isn't specifically made for that type of bulb.

Raptor05121, thanks for the thread! It was a good read and even though I don't know anything about what I'm trying to do I feel like I have a basic understanding. I would still like to go with the 6000K HIDs over just upgrading my bulb... So I guess I would have to buy separate bulbs For my high and low beams?

If possible, could anyone provide me with a link to HIDs (both high and low beam I guess?) that fits what I am looking for and will fit in the projectors I ordered? Price isn't a concern so whatever you find please post a link!

you'll have to confirm your bulb sizes, it should come with bulbs and the bulbs should say. check out www.retrosolutions.com or www.hidextra.com im running hid extra kits right now and dont have any trouble what-so-ever with em. there like 60 a kit so relatively cheap. i believe retro solutions is just more expensive. i.e. "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"

Yes, we would know what size the low-beam projector is. I'm betting its a 9006. But let us know and we can help. Whoever you buy from, make sure they have a lifetime warranty because HID failures are common.

While they do make the H3C HID bulb for the high-beam, I recommend you reconsider switching your high-beam to Xenon for several purposes:

You retain your flash-to-pass (HIDs take about 15 seconds to get to full brightness) and the cost would double for such a small bulb I doubt you will use that often.

i run hid in my high beams and its bitter sweet. lol yes its a bit sketchy while there warming up but once there warm, WOW. lol my highs are H1 and the lows are 9006. im sure you can find a lot better halogen style with xenon gas for your high beam that work pretty good too. im in the process of trading my projectors for some painted oem lights at the moment

I emailed the manufacture to find out what bulbs the high and low beams are.. And getting a xenon bulb for my high beams sounds like a good idea. I'll post when Anzo replies with the bulb sizes

So after reading up on retrofits, I've decided to go that route. Placing my order now with Brian at sickhids.com

I'm pretty excited and it's worth the little extra money. And Brian is a great guy.. Very easy to work with and get ahold of. If anyone is interested in custom HID projectors they need to give him a shout
