Alright guys, I know this might be a retarded thread but I've been thinking bout "smoking" my tail lights on my 2001 f150 and was wondering what all there is to it? Imma leave the clear part at the bottom but wanna smoke the red. Do you just tape off the clear and start spraying layers or what? Thanks guys...

I agree that people should not open their mouth unless they supply correct, and valuable info pertaining to the OPS original post. Talking down, ranting, etc... sure, it's safety related in this case but should be left out. If you can't supply to the OP then don't bother...

In this case, those lights are nice smoked. I am getting an 2003 model F-150 and I am looking toward the Recon shaded lights vs. doing the tinted. (This is why..) One the work is tedious. If you're an auto painter, then sure go for it! If you aren't, then I would leave it alone.

Also, if you're in a climate with a lot of humidity like here in Florida you will have an issue whether it be 6 months to a year where the light just looked dry and eventually will peel. I say that because I have seen some very good looking lights on Audi's, Fords, Honda's, etc here locally at car clubs etc that tinted the lights and ALL (with no exception) peeled or looked horrible shortly after. (My opinion) is to find lights that are tinted already (w/out the paint stuff...) Then upgrade your light bulbs to brighter bulbs or LED to offset some of the light loss you will lose.

 

I'm sure the gent put thought into that while thinking of his lights.. Good luck with the lights bud.. either way show us some pics!

 

Yeah man, there have been some threads on the matter, just do a search. I even did a small write up a while back. I've been stopped by the po-lice with my lights and they tried to hassle me about them, but I calmly told them that I had a light bar under my tailgate. Seemed to work.

op you can by mine in about a month haha. i got new ones but im still gonna take them with me to court to prove to them the trooper that said theyre illegal was wrong

 

Check my thread in the how to section for high gloss tinted tails. I masked off my backup lights as well.

Look up Night shading your taillights. Pretty easy job too
