Tint question

CA law states that no less than 70% of visible light must pass through the drivers and front passengers' windows. what is this in terms of tint talk. like 20% tint?

20% means 20% light transparency (or visible light as I understand). Even a normal factory window doesn't let in 100% of light. So legally you probably cannot put any tint on the front windows if your law is 70%.
Oregon's law was 35% front windows, meaning you had to get no darker than 40% tint to be legal. You wouldn't even hardly be able to see there was any film at 40%.

But, everyone else does it.

I'm running 18% up front and can see fine. Sure, it's dark and night, but I can still see.

The answer to your question DOD 4.6 is, if the law says 70% of light must pass through the window, the darkest tint you can put on is 70%.

The % on the tint tells you how much light will pass through the tint. So, the smaller the % on the tint, the darker it will be.

It's not even worth the money to tint a window with 70%, in my opinion.

You can probably get away with 35% tint. It blacks the window but does not block visibility from the exterior.

I put on 5% all the way around and love it. Visibility is not bad at all even with the back with it being stock tint plus 5% which makes it almost bouble limo. You can't even see in the back windows which is nice for security reasons. Here is a pic.

I have not been hassled one bit with 35% on my driver/passenger windows. When I had 5% on my Sierra, I got a ticket for it. So, with 35% you should not have any problems with the rollers. If you do end up getting pulled over, just roll your windows down before they walk up to your ride. They just don't like to not be able to see what you are doing as they approach you.

It looks darker/lighter under different lighting conditions. Both pics are the same, 35%.

California law is that you can't have any type of film on your front windows. Whether it's 5% or 70%. I have a couple cops in my family and I get crap all the time because I have dark windows all around.

From what they say though, it all depends on the cop and the situation. You're most likely not going to get a ticket while you are just driving around doing your daily business. If you get pulled over for something else they may decide to add a tint ticket to the list; which happened to me with one of my cars.

The biggie is using the tint to be able to get inside the vehicle. If you look suspicious and they want to know more all they have to do is use the tint and they're in. Normal looking trucks like Socalrunner's and the others above probably wouldn't get too much attention but if you have a lot of mods on it or look like a punk it's gonna get you pulled over.

You shouldn't get any crap for 35%. You can still see everything inside. you can go as dark as you want on the back windows

Funny this thread is up. I just got pulled over today at lunch, the state trooper asked me to do him a favor and take off the front two windows of tint. They really just do it for safety reasons. You can't see in my truck.

Which is why you always have the window rolled down before the cop walks up to it. I don't blame the cops, for all they know you could have a .45 hand cannon pointed at the from behind the tint.

I think you misunderstood. I was at a stop sign, we basically rolled up at the same time. I turned and can see him eyeballing me big time. He whipped it around and hit the lights. When he walked up to the truck, my window was down. He pulled me over because he spotted the tint.... no other reason.

I really do not want to take it off.. it looks good, but I work less than a mile from the trooper station and I think chances are I will pass him again.

Ah, that sucks. I didn't think tint was a "pullable" offense. Just something they can add on if they've already got you for something else. Kind of like our inspection stickers in NC. To my knowledge you can't be pulled over for an expired inspection, but they can tack it on if they pulled you for speeding, or rolling through a stop, etc.

What % tint did/do you have on there? Black trucks with a dark tint look great! So do white trucks with dark tint for that matter.
