Back seats in my Supercab ???

Would this be crazy ?

I said from the start, that nobody would "ever" sit in the back seats of my truck anyway (it will be rare enough to have anybody in the front passenger side)..... which is why I originally wanted a reg. cab. But the extra storage space, and being able to recline my front seats to a "sleeping position" is going to be really nice. So, from that standpoint, I'm glad I had my arm twisted.

But about those absolutely worthless, space robbing back seats..... Should I yank them, and sell them on ebay ? How hard would this be ? I know the floor is not completely flat across, but maybe I could cut a false floor out of plywood, then cover it with closely matching carpet. This would sure make it easier to put a 150qt icebox (for multi-day fishing trips) on one side, and a nice subwoofer box on the other (for my fairly extreme stereo upgrade this Winter).

Oh, and BTW, re-sale of my truck means absolutely nothing to me, as 1) I plan to drive it until it's worth $50 at the wreckers anyway, and 2) I sure wouldn't have bought a full sized truck, if I were worried about resale.

BTW, I yanked the rear seats in my little car last year (which was brand new also) and built a false floor, like I'm talking about for the truck... It came out great ! Never a second thought.
I'm telling you guys, for a tiny car, it has TONS of space ! Like a subcompact SUV ;-)

Anything else I should consider ?

Thanks,
Fish

I personally wouldn't do it to my own truck

But for someone that doesn't need the seat as a seat. I think its a great idea. It will be nice for you to have all that storage space in protected cab, so everything doesn't have to be in the bed. I have one of the "under the seat" sub boxes with no seat lift, so my selection of available subs was very limited. You mentioned building an extreme audio system, so this will help.

Now I do not know how hard it will be to remove. I imagine that you can figure it out pretty easily. You are probably going to want to fab up something for the back wall as well as the floor.

If you don't need the seat, then go for it man. It sounds like you have the "know how" and skills to make it happen the right way.

Right on :-)

I think I am going to do this. It will be nice, not just to have "more space"..... but to have more "square, non-bouncing space". I mean think about when you go to transport stuff back their, how you are either trying to squeeze it in front of the seat, or set it on top, and having it bounce and roll around, all the way to your destination, because its not on a flat, solid footing. I think this is going to be sweet ! :-)

Ahhh geeeez ! Here we go again ! Once those wheels start turning, it's all over ! Freaking AADD.... now I won't be able to think about anything else ! ;-) ....well maybe those darn chrome bumpers will help to distract me....

Peace,
Fish

Do it! I think it would look great. I did the same thing in my ford ranger and I loved it. If i didn't use my back seats so much I would do it.

Thank you NoLonger.....

The decision is made ! :-) Now its just a matter of yanking out the seats, and figuring out how to build my flat, false floor. The car wasn't too tough. Hopefully the truck won't be either.

Whoo Hoo ! :-)

Hey gr8....

Now that would be funny :-)

I have actually brought out a reclining lawn chair in my little boat, while Sturgeon fishing (a total waiting game) and with the layout out of my boat (no stinking benches !!!) I actually had plenty of space.

Hey Raptor....

I will. BTW, I was by mechanic buddy's house a little bit ago. He looked it over and said it should be pretty easy to get the seats out. Actually, he said he could take out the rear seat belt assemblies too. (of course I'd keep those in storage, in the house).

Only issue I saw, was that the very back of the cab slopes up at a pretty steep angle, so to make the floor totally flat against the back wall, my false floor would have to sit really high, which would lose lots of space underneath it, and defeat the whole purpose of gaining extra space, by removing the seats. I think the solution will be to not bring the false floor all the way to the back wall, but maybe to stop about 6" shy, so it can sit 4" lower. Of course the carpet can continue up the slope, to the back wall, and then all the way up to the window if I want it to. We'll see.

But yes, I'll post photos....

Peace,
Fish

Hey fish,
If you were feeling creative I've got an idea for ya. Keep the floor level all the way to the back of the cab. The the space underneath the floor you could make into a set of draws that could slide out. Extra storage space for what ever you need.

I would put the slide out drawers right here

Hey NoLonger.......

Hmmm. That sounds like some work. I'll consider it. Another possibility though, is to have the floor all the way to the back wall, which makes the floor higher, but just making that extra space under the front of it accessable, to slide stuff under or back out (like the jack stand which is already under the seat, jumper cables, etc).

Will probably rip the seats out next week, then it might be a few weeks before I actually start building the floor. So I will have plenty of time to contemplate it.

Peace,
Fish

Sounds like a decent idea if you never use your back seats.

Perhaps get some D-rings (the kind that rotate so the lay flat when not used) and mount them to the new floor you are making. That way if you have some smaller stuff you could put some bunjee cords over the stuff so it doesn't slide around.

You could probably even recess them slightly into the plywood so you can easily slide coolers and whatnot over them.

And for the contour of the floor... I'd just go ahead and make it one flat piece of plywood. How often are you going to stack stuff all the way to the ceiling so that you will need the extra 3 inches of space????? I think in the long run you'd be much happier with a completely flat floor so you can put stuff in easier.
