97-03 License Plate Lights (LEDs)

Ok well I stopped by Advanced Auto today to pick up some detailing supplies with a friend and I notice they had one set of white 194 LEDs left for sale. $7.99. Way better than the $14.82 I priced them online and the 2-week wait for shipping. So I get them and pop them in. Tonight I turn on the lights and the output is HORRIBLE! I can't see the first or last letter period! Pulling them out they are bright, but I blame this on the OEM housings. They look too small and not a very good light source. Does anyone have a fix for this? I understand how frustrating it is for officers to read them with 75% of all other drivers not even having license plate lights, but I want mine readable.

You understand? Have you started writing licenses plate numbers down like ManualF150? Was this while you were drafting someone at 80 mph blaring your "police siren"

Oh yes. I even wrote them a ticket with my MemoPad and Bic ballpoint I keep handy in my glovebox. Nailed 'em for wreckless driving and some other cool stuff. Called it some backup on my trust CB radio and almost had a shootout but I kept my water pistol by my side and took him down. I love to do this on my own time and money. Gee, what a blast.

Back to topic, I just popped off my actual housings and cleaned them. A bit better but not a whole lot. I'm going to look into seeing if there are any suitable replacements for them.

Have you tried painting the insides silver like I did to improve reflection? Make sure you don't get any paint on the window!

Try it, it can't hurt (if you're careful).

I think mine are perfectly "street legal".

I was thinking about it jack, but its soo tiny that I doubt it will do anything. I can barely fit the tip of my pinky in the spot the bulb occupies its so small! Do you have a pic of your light bulb holders? Maybe I could retrofit the newer style's on the older gen bumper somehow.

Here's two. I doubt they're much different than yours. Notice how short the LED is though. Even though it's a forward firing light, it only goes about halfway into the light holder. The plastic in the LED is also white which helps in the reflection properties. You can see the silver paint inside the holder in the first picture.

Guess I could have wiped the dirt off! :o

Hear's the link to the thread that shows a very blurry picture of them at night and tells you what the bulbs are and where I got them. https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...=332922&page=2

You might give this a try. The bulbs are cheap enough and silver paint can't hurt anything.
