Question Replacing Vinyl Steering Wheel with Leather

I'm looking to replace the cheep/skinny Vinyl Steering Wheel, that my 99XLT came with with a Leather Steering wheel.

Has anyone done this, how much was the steering wheel?

Why doesn't a XLT have a leather steering wheel as standard equipment?

Don't know the exact price, but I think a new leather steering wheel is over $350. An alternative is to get a leather wheel cover from JC Whitney. Around $25 for the higher quality model with only one seam. Takes around 45 minutes to install. I've had them on my 97 and my new 00. Not a slick as a factory unit, but a lot cheaper. Gives the wheel a much better feel.
Regards, Ed.

I just put a steering wheel cover from the Auto Zone on and it worked great. It is fake leather but was only $8. It just slips over the steering wheel. I used to buy the sitich type leather covers years ago and they work good too.

Either way it is a nice cheap alternative to pulling off the old steering wheel and putting a new one on.

I agree that a leather steering wheel should be standard on an XLT.

I installed two of the stitch on steering wheel covers. First was a normal cover and I had to fight pretty hard to get that one on. Then on top of that Auto Zone had one that said it was for trucks (a little larger diameter) so I added also. With both on I have a steering wheel that is a good grip, not that skinny feel like the older steering wheels.

You could also call a junk yard and get one off a wrecked Expedition or F150 with the leather wheel....preferably one that hasnt fired the airbag.
