New to Eco

Greetings! New to eco boost here. Just bought a 2017 3.5 and was wondering what I need to be on the lookout for as far as any issues. I’ve seen stuff about weepholes and catch cans. Not a mechanical kinda guy, so trying to make sense of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

What I do with mine is change the oil every 4-5,000 miles. I've changed the plugs at around 28,000 miles, gapped to .030. Going to be doing another plug change in the near future, just because I have the plugs and it's got 56,000 miles on it now. No real 'issues' with it, just 'cause...

I don't have a can and I have not drilled any holes in it... Totally fine so far.

I have also drained the trans pan and refilled and also just did the transfer case (4x4) a week or so ago.

Going to drain the rad next and refill with 50/50 mix.

I'll probably do the diffs at 75,000 miles.

I did just put on new Bilstein 5100 shocks on the rear. Just ordered the front 5100 shocks to replace in the OEM struts today. Watched some YouTube vids on the process and seems within my ability to do, but I will need to get spring compressors too... I have all the other tools necessary.. OH, I'll have to get it aligned afterward too, so I'll take it into a shop for the alignment.

Other than that, it's just normal 'vehicle maintenance'.. And don't beat the ***** out of it..

Good luck!

Mitch

Most of that stuff you probably read was on the 1st gen EcoBoost. The 2017 is the 2nd gen EcoBoost that uses a dual port/direct injection system; hence, the catch can isn't really necessary. The port injection will help keep the intake valves clean from sludge.

Mitch gave you good advice about maintenance. I don't have weep holes or catch cans either and have not had any problems with my engine. I use my truck mostly for towing my trailer and it's a super tow vehicle! I think you're gong to love your new truck.

Get motorcraft engine air and cabin air filters online. Living in the city and they were about toast at around 20k miles. No need for special tools on the cabin airfilter I used a paint mix stick to pop the wood trim piece off.

Change the engine oil at 20-25% life, below that and there is a noticeable power loss. I would guess that is around 5,000-6,000 miles.

For some reason the factory first oil lost about a quart and I actually had to put some in but I rode it down to 0% oil life; but has been ok on consumption since. So I guess check it?

My ecoboost runs noticeably rougher that my old 6.2 gas V8, but nothing to worry about.

I would let the dealer do the oil changes and basic service on it. I think they even rotate the tires.
