2010 F150 FX4 experience

I just wanted to post what was wrong with my truck because I searched and searched and couldn't find anything, I luckily have a warranty on my truck and so maybe this will help someone who doesn't. My truck had this ticking sound that I thought was an exhaust leak, loss of power, start rough idling through the drive thru and it was run really rough when backing a trailer up. Brought it to the dealership to get it diagnosed and they said all those things are associated with bad cam phasers. They replaced them.. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow and will post an update. I hope this helps someone who was as lost as me. I was under my truck searching for holes in my exhaust, changed the oil, changed the spark plugs, changed air filters and still nothing fixed it. I really hope this helps.

Thanks.

I'm very surprised you didn't find anything searching. This is a very common issue with the 5.4 3 valve and there are a LOT of posts about it. To do the job RIGHT, the entire timing set should be replaced, along with a high volume Melling oil pump. I highly doubt the dealer will do all that.

How many miles on your truck? I have some model, same year, same engine.

ya i don't think they did that and I'm not THAT mechanically inclined. I also didn't know exactly what I was looking for other than an exhaust leak. Ya I think they just replaced the cams.

I misread what you ment. Well I found some things matching my issue and came across the cam phaser issue but a lot didn't ever mention all the issues like the shuttering backing up with a trailer or about dieing only in drive thrus. And just curious why would the timing need replaced? I understand the oil pump because of the low oil pressure and cam thing but not the timing. Like I said, not mechanicaly inclined.

By timing set I mean phasers, solenoids, cam (timing) chains, guides, and tensioners.

GLC what does it costs to do the whole job? I guess I should start saving up. I've had those symptoms occasionally but then they go away and it runs fine.

Load this up on YouTube, this is part 1 of 4. Parts 2, 3, and 4 are available in the right sidebar. The first comment has the full parts list with links, you can add up the prices. Labor? No idea, a flat rate manual should help.

alright so I got my truck back today and they didnt fix the clicking sound. Kinda PO . They changed out some solenoid and gaskets. I argued with the mechanic and general manager on why they didn't fix it. Maybe someone here or GLC knows. I have a clicking sound coming from passenger side only when I accelerate. Doesn't happen if I'm in park and rev. Only when I'm accelerating in drive and sounds like its coming from right behind front passenger tire. If its something I can fix ill do it rather than send it to some dip at the dealership.

Time to start documenting all of the conversations, who was there, what was said, dates and times. Keep all paperwork. Take it back and tell them to replace the parts that they should have replaced the first time. And ask for a loaner. Don't delay or your warranty will expire before you know it.
