2009 - 2014 F-150

Thinking about a 3.7 V6 F150? I've got one.

Also, I should say the truck I was driving was a 4X4 XLT extended cab (Super) with a 3.73 lim slip. It was unloaded at the time and I was driving in 4 lanes of traffic which was going at about 90 to 100 km per hour. ??About 55 to 60 mph??

My Grand Cherokee only had 174 hp I believe but the 3.7L has 308 hp. The Jeep is obviously lighter but I think the torque curves really change the whole feel of the engine. I never even thought about all this stuff before I bought the truck.

The 3.7 in the F150 is rated at 302 hp and 278 lb/ft torque. I don't know what year jeep you had. I didn't see any 174 hp version. For years the 4.0 was rated at 190 hp and 235 lb/ft torque. I'm sure that because of the bore and stroke the torque peaked sooner than the high revving 3.7 from ford.


I'm not a chearleader for the 3.7. I am a Ford guy, and I'm pleased with their entire engine line up. I mean it when I say I understand where you are coming from. I got into my 2011 F150 from a 2007 Ford Edge. I'd already had some experience with a Ford, high revving V6 mated to a six speed auto. It took less for me to get used to than say someone coming from a Jeep 4.0 with a four speed auto, or a 2008 F150 with a four speed auto. My point is, the 3.7 isn't a dog.

I started this thread almost a year ago, when I bought this F150. I've given my impressions of this truck, the good, the bad and everything in between. It is not the best thing since sliced bread. It is an adequate engine for this truck. If I were looking at a heavier configuration, like an extended cab 4X4, I'd get the 5.0 too.

3.7 Question

I just bought a used 2011 SuperCrew with the 3.7 with 14,000 miles. I have only put about 400 miles on the truck and first full tank I only got 18.9 mpg with mostly highway driving with cruise set at 70mph. I am a little dissapointed as my 2005 F150 with 4.6 v8 gets the same or sometimes better.

One thing I noticed was that when I am set at 70 with cruise on and I hit the trailer/tow button there is no downshift and jump in rpms as I usually get with the other 3 Fords I have owned. Also, the tach shows 2000 rpms at 70 mph.

Is that about right for 6th gear? Since I don't feel a downshift and there is no jump in rpms I'm begining to think it is not shifting up to 6th.

When I'm driving below 65 the mileage on the display is great, (22-24 mpg). when I go to 70mph it drops to 17-18 mpg.

What are your rpms at 70 mph?

You have the 3.73 rear gears and about 2000rpm is right for 70mph. My SCab will get about 20-21mpg at 70. I found just slowing down to 65mph will get you around 23.

Once you start driving tap the minus button on the shift stalk and your gears(1-6) will light up in your LCD display. You can see what gear you are in.

Its been my experience with smaller engines that in tougher environments such as wind, going up hills, loads, etc theur MPG diminish and sometimes get the same or less than the bigger engines. I think truly to blow MPG out of the water you have to have more favorable conditions and drive nicer to achieve the higher numbers.

Granky... that 18.9 for mostly highway seems pretty low. Would check tire pressure etc... basics. Can share from my experience as a 2011 3.7 Screw owner,,, rpm is close to 2k rpm @70... should still see 20+... but lowering to about 63mph should/could push 23-24.

Also... If I hit the pedal hard and draw on the motor... mpg will drop a couple points... versus slower ramp up starts for example... and more coasting.... very sensitive to how you drive.

I agree 100%, as a 3.7 F150 owner. I also believe that this would hold true, to some extent, to any motor in just about any vehicle.

I've got the 3.73's and at 70mph it's at just under 2K rpm. I usually set the cruise at 70-72mph, just below or at 2K rpm. I know that I could get better mpg at 65mph, but I need to feel like I'm getting there sooner.

I've found that my truck get's the best mpg at around 55mph. It's when I'm on country roads where the speed limit is 50-55mph that I see the best mpg numbers.




Speaking about mpg numbers... gassed up tonight. Had gone 345mi. Used just over 3/4 tank. Old school math gave me 17.7. Lie-o-meter gave me 17.6. The cold air is taking it's toll. In addition, we've finally had some snow here, though not much. Last week I was coming home from a night Dr. appt and there was a coating on the roads. I had a little fun, turned off the TC, to see what the truck would do. It actually did pretty good in 2wd. Got to a point where there were a few cars who couldn't make it up a hill, so I put it in 4wd and got out of there before one of them hit me. Yesterday there was a little more snow to drive in. Not enough for 4wd, but enough where I wasn't able to get the truck past 4th gear. Considering the type of driving I'd done on the last tank, I'd say I did pretty good. I'd sure like to see it in the 20's again though.

I let you guys know how my brand new Ford F150, SuperCab, 5.0L, 3.73 non slip does when we are talking about gas guzzling.... If you dont want to pay for gas, dont buy a truck, boat, or a snow mobile....

Gas costs less than bottled water.... so drink away!!

I'd be interested in knowing what kind of mpg you get with the 5.0. From what I"ve seen, it does pretty good.

I don't want have to pay for a lot of things, but understand that I have to. If I were that concerned or could just not afford the gas, I wouldn't have purchased a full size pick up truck. I don't know if you noticed, one of the main reasons Ford said they designed the new engines was customers concerns about fuel economy. If you don't care how much you spend on gas, ok. I've got a lot of things that I need to spend my money on. I don't have an unlimited supply. I, like many other Ford customers, am just trying to spend my money wisely. No one is saying you have to.

Like I've said, enjoy the 5.0. I'm sure that's a great truck.

I'm running the 3.7 in my 2011 XLT Super Cab 4x4. Love it! Towing boat, 2-horse trailer (5000 lbs+) with no problems. My XLT did not come with the the tow package, so I had to install an aftermarket hitch, trailer brake and wiring. I am very happy with the setup, and the sway control is great with the heavy trailer.

daily driving 60hwy/40 city and averaging 18.2 mpg on the meter, and 17.9 on fuel measurement.

You might want to consider a transmission cooler too.

One thing I have noticed as well is us folks with the 3.7L are have zero problems that the 2 other engined trucks are having.
