GLC, that is why the EPA lists the variance in smaller print below each big number. Each driver's style and conditions will vary.

The point of the EPA fuel economy ratings is to use the same road conditions and driving style to compare vehicles to each other. Every driver knows how their driving style/habits/conditions compare to the EPA rating. If Joe always gets 10% better than the EPA ratings, then he'll likely get that in any vehicle. If Bob get 20% worse, then he'll always get that no matter the vehicle.

I have no doubt whatsoever that some EB's could get mid-20's on the highway driven conservatively. I also have no doubt that some 5.0's could get at least low 20's driven the same way. I also would expect some people to never even see 20 with either engine!

My 03 4.2 was rated at 16/20 under the old system. I'm guessing that would be maybe 14/18 or 14/19 under the new system. Well - I've seen everywhere between 12 and 23 real world.
My custom ordered FX4 Ecoboost was built this week, now I am waiting for arrival.

According to the sticker, 9.6L/100km Highway which works out to 24.5MPG

if this is accurate I'm impressed since it is a 4x4 with a 3.73 rear end.

The 4x4 5.0 is rated at 10.5L/100km highway.

So .9L/100km difference. It's not bad, but not what i was expecting.

Don't forget the Ecoboost doesn't have the same 6th gear then the rest.Witch help to lower the fuel consumption.

All in all, the Ecoboost will average 1L/100km less then the 5.0

14L/100km vs. 15L/100km City
9.6L/100km vs. 10.5L/100km Highway

They do not test trucks for EPA with the 3.73. They use the standard axle for that truck and engine combination. They also do not test different cab configurations (I mean they can use the lightest regular cab if they want to) So these figures could have came from a regular cab 4x4 with the 3.31 axle.
Having said all of that, there should be less than 1 mpg between a reg cab and SCREW due to weight, and the axle probably doesn't account for much difference either unless you are doing way over 70 mph

So officially in a 4x2, the 3.5 EB (16/22) is rated 1 MPG better than the 5.0
(15/21)

So when do we find out the HP/TQ numbers for running premium fuel in the Ecoboost?

Still not what many of us expected to hear, but I am still very impressed with the EB and its my top choice when I go to purchase a 2011 FX4 later this year. My only realy qualm about buying the V6 is the loss of a V8's rumble, I love a nice deep rumble from the exhuast; but if someone came out with an exhaust to really bring out the turbo's on the EB like in a diesel I'd be happy! I'm still excited about the EB no matter what.

If you look at it, anything gets better mileage than my current truck

I imagine they will release them on the 15th when they tear the engine down. Since the EPA numbers were found out several weeks (at least for the 4x4) ago, that is about the only official surprise that they have left.

True, but the engine performs more closely to the 6.2, which gets much worse mileage.

In 4x4 form, the EB gets 2 better than the 5.0 on the highway (21 vs. 19).

I am still impressed considering the power and torque it puts out and the weight of what it is in. I think people will complain no matter what the number. Some will never be satisfied, even if it got 50 mpg hwy.

I also think Ford isn't tuning the Ecoboost to its full potential yet so it can have a bit "left in the tank" just in case the competition steps up a bit.

It sounds better than you would think. It almost has that V-8 sound at WOT but not even audible at idle.

I talked with a guy that designs aftermarket parts. They are already working on wastegates, upgraded intercoolers, and boost controllers for them. Not to mention that tunes are already out for them in the SHO and MKZ models. They are getting 400awhp with just a tune in them while still not adding too much ignition or leaning it out.

i cant wait to see power gains with tuners, ESPECIALLY when all these people that are saying "im not buying no V6 sounding truck,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH im getting the 5.0 BLAH" and then the people get custom tunes with the ecoboost when the 5.0 lovers get there tunes and see the power difference then...o yeah, and the MPG increase with a tune.
