2011 5.0 f-150
2011 5.0 Test Drive
Today I took a test ride in a 2011 Supercrew with the 5.0 V8. All I can say is wow! This truck/engine combo is the way to go if you are looking for the best balance between performance and towing. This engine easily handled the heavier truck body and it had ***** throughout the rpm range. It had great acceleration when entering the highway...I was going over 80 mph before I reached the highway entrance!
I have driven both the Ecoboost and the 5.0. The 5.0 sounds better and has better overall driveability. The Ecoboost may have better fuel mileage, but I am not concerned about this. If I was, I would be driving a Focus. This engine will easily tow my 18' ski boat and give me excellent performance when I need it.
Way to go Ford! The 5.0 is a beast and I cannot wait to own one

My last full size truck was a 2000 F-150 with the 5.4 which is similar to what you are running.

The 5.0 is pretty damn quick and the only reason I would get a tune for it would be to get tighter shifts and to remove the slight delay (purposely added for the stock tune).
When I took the truck on the highway, I quickly learned that this truck had authority on the road. Passing was effortless and I found it very impressive for a heavy truck.
Let's put it this way, if someone pulled up to me with a 2011 5.0 F150 and we raced, my current setup would lose in the initial launch and down the stretch. Maybe someday I'll have the chance to try it...it would be interesting to see how many seconds my rig would be behind him.
If you could offer a comparison between this and your current 5.4 that would be helpful.
Having recently unloaded my 2010 Lariat with th 5.4 and spending some good time in the 5.0 at the TMS drive event, I can offer this comparison.
I already own a 5.0 in my Mustang, so I'm familiar with the ins and outs of the engine. In its Mustang debut, it wasn't/isn't without its issues. But, the performance is second to none for the price and displacement. The trucks appear to have none of the issues.
The 5.0 has incredible range. Power is present throughout the band. Like the 4.6 and unlike the newer 5.4, it favors the higher end of the RPM band for max HP. The 5.0 revs very quickly and smoothly, unlike the 5.4. Throttle response is MUCH better with the 5.0. I haven't been able to tow with the 5.0 to compare in this category. My only compliment on the 5.4 is its towing characteristics. It seems to be as responsive and powerful towing a full load as it is without anything but me in the truck. The 5.0 will likely be less this way, but it depends on what you are towing. For "normal" use, i.e. regular sized boats, campers, etc. , the 5.0 will be just as good.
For daily driving characteristics, there is no comparison, The 5.0 is much better than the 5.4. This is why I would favor it over the EB. The EB tows well, but just doesn't feel as dynamic to me as the 5.0 for regular driving conditions.
Finally, the sound. The 5.0 sounds bad a*& in the Mustang and sounds almost as good in the F-150. The sound of the 5.4 is a joke without exhaust mods.

How does it have better driveability? The Ecoboost is slightly faster off the line, faster to 60 mph, same chassis, more low end torque like a small diesel which tows more and gets better mileage doing it.
How is the 5.0 better? Sound makes it have better driveability?

[QUOTE=Mo Power;4424123]I drove both at the Texas Motor Speedway. Both felt good off the line. The 5.0 rev's higher than the Ecoboost. Loaded or unloaded the Ecoboost wins.
So why in your opinion is the 5.0 better for driving?

I know you can turn off the TC from the screen or the button on the dash. I also think it shows the status of the transfer case and the e-locker on one of the menus.
The 5.0 just seems more like an all around user friendly and fun package. To me, the EB is boring. It has a flat torque curve, sounds benign and just doesnt "do it" for me. Yes, it can pull a house down, but I don't do that every day.
I'm really holding out hope that the ecoboost 3.5 is going to be substantially better than the 5.0 on gas. The reason being that I could justify trading in my '07 on one. I can't justify trading it on on an '11 just for the nicer interior and much better (than the 5.4) 5.0 liter. Well not for a few more years anyhow.
Honestly to me in the other applications, ecoboost isn't all that impressive. The power output is impressive for its displacement, sure. However smaller displacement V8s that make similar power are pretty capable of similar mpg numbers in other similar vehicles. I was riding kind of high of this ecoboost F150 idea today, but thinking about that, combined with reading here that only a 5% increase over the 5.0 (1-1.5 mpg) is expected, and the fact that Ford not yet releasing the numbers is making me suspicious, has dampened my spirits on it.

The EB will need more than a 1-2 mpg gain over the 5.0 to really take off. People are going to have a hard time putting down the extra cash and taking the risk on a V6 (turbocharged or not) if it gets similar mileage to a more trusted V8 application.
