Blue Smoke @ Start Up

2010 Platinum with around 8,000 miles on it. I have noticed that at start up I am getting a puff of Blue Smoke out the exhaust, is this common or is there a problem with the engine. Has anyone else noticed this siruation?

Have you had the oil changed lately? If so when, and did you do it yourself or have someone else (eg: Ford Dealer, JiffyLube, etc) do it?

Blue smoke can also mean an excessively rich start, meaning the engine is pumping too much gas into one or more cylinders at start up. Do you wait a few seconds after turning to key for the fuel pump to preload the injectors with fuel?

Also blue smoke when first starting means oil is leaking past valves or piston rings. You might need to have it examined.

Blue smoke is oil, and on startup is usually valve guides or seals. Ford probably won't do anything about it unless the oil consumption is excessive.

As glc said, blue smoke is oil. If it's just a light puff on startup it's possible that the valve guides and seals haven't "worn in" yet. 5w20 is pretty thin and will leak past the slightest gap.

Mine does it on rare occasions. Not worried about it for now. I'm at the same mileage, but I did notice it is using 1/2 a quart with 2500 miles since the last oil change.

Mine also did that occassionally at around that same mileage, especially when it was cold outside. I'm at 10K now and it does not do that.

There must be some kind of magical mileage thing on these things. Several of us have had this situation. Also, I've been griping about the my max average MPG being 17.5 since I've owned my 2010. Somehow, since I hit 10K in mileage, I'm now getting closer to 20 on my drive to work. Interesting.

It is good to hear that this may go away.

I have a 2010 F150 4.6L I purchased new in March of 2011 I have about 7500 miles on the truck and I have noticed few times when I have started the truck I get a cloud of blue smoke. It goes away immediately. It does not do it every time. I too have noticed that there is black residue around the exhaust. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow and even if they tell me its fine I will at least have evidence that I took it in the case that I have problems later on.
