Surging transmission when cold

Ive had my truck just over 2 months and its been great. Now that the temps are dropping ive noticed an issue when I first drive my truck in the morning. In the morning my first 2 miles or so are in a residential area so I only go 25mph. When I first leave about 30 seconds into my trip the truck shifts to 4th or fifth gear and I can literlaly feel the truck surging. Keep in mind im only going 25ph and when this happens the RPMs surge from 1100 to 1300(25mph either 4th or fifth gear). Feels like the tranny is shifting to soon and putting a strain on the engine. I really dont know what it is and it will be awhile before I can get it to the dealer and chances are they wont be able to duplicate the problem. Also when this happens I cam sometimes hear a nosie coming from the tranny during the surging. After the first few minutes everything is fine and the truck drives great.

Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Could this be the converter unlocking and locking again? Maybe the PCM is confused and needs a reflash?? Hopefully someone esle on here has experienced this issue and could help me out. Thanks

-Leonard

Funny you posted this today. This morning it was 8 below zero when I took off and I believe I experienced the same thing you did. I was going about 30 mph and the tranny started to "surge" or shift back and forth probably 4-5 times which made my rpms surge back and forth from about 1100-1300 like you said. I sped up to get out of that "zone" and it went away and hasn't done it since. Not sure what was going on.

Put mine down on the list to, but mine does it every morning and outside temp does not matter.

Mine does it too, and not at all cold here. Almost feels more like the Torque Converter is locking and unlocking more so than shifting.

Do you have a programmer or aftermarket CAI? 4.6L 3V or 5.4L?

Truck is bone stock with 2100 miles on it, also has the 5.4 in it. Not sure if its outside temp related but it only does it when the truck is stone cold (sitting for 8 hours or so). I just thought it was outisde temp related because I first noticed it on a cold morning. Im glad im not the only one having this issue, hopefully one of us will figure it out soon.

Mine does the same thing in the mornings. It shifts wierd all the time after that regardless of temp. I'm in SoCal so even in the mornings its 50 degrees at lowest. I had the TSB flash for the trans issue, and it really hasn't done much, this thing shifts when it feels like it and drives me crazy.

My new 2010 sure doesn't shift as smooth as my 2006. Hopefully it will get better after break-in, but I don't know.

Yep, my 09 does the same thing. Not sure if the TCM flash update will help or not. Glad to hear it's not just mine.

sorry for the useless post. i'm just venting meaning, i'm sick and tired of this new 6spd tranny, its driving me nuts. looking forward to getting a tuner to hopefully "fix" it since my dealership wont do anything about it.

I'm surprised, the 6-speed in my 2010 works great! It's on the 4.6L 3v.

It is adaptive so maybe there is something about the way you drive it that doesn't agree with the programming. If that's the case, I'm not blaming it on you, just saying maybe the software only works well for some driving styles.

Actually, I just looked at your previous posts describing the problem in more detail and I would have to guess there is something wrong with your truck. I'm basing that on your lower than average MPG and on your description of how it shifts. Maybe it somehow got programmed with the wrong tire diameter at the factory?

Or maybe Ford changes the shift programs for max tow package (even when not in tow/haul mode)?
