Surging transmission when cold
Touch wood, but the TSB is working fantastic so far. Transmission is smoother (was smooth before just had some hiccups), and much more "alert" it seems. No more clunk in the 1-2 and 2-1 shifts. Only thing that has me confused is the mechanic told me to take it easy for a few days however other people (on this site) have stated their mechanics said to drive the snot out of it. So it leaves me wondering which way is the right way?
It appears as though I spoke too soon. My catch up bump (bad downshift) is far worse than it was before they updated the computer. The jumpy start is better though. I am scheduled to take it back to the dealer again next week...
getting colder and first thing in the morning 50-60km surge getting worse. once warmed up its gone. was at dealer and seen the tsb screen says aware of cold surge and to check back for update in 4th quarter. it was not released a month ago.
good luck!

5.4 vs 4.6 shifting
I took delivery on a 2010 Lariat Screw a few weeks ago 5.4L w/3.55 LS. I did notice some strange shifts now and then. While hand washing the truck a few days later (and 250 miles) I found some dents on the roof and returned it to the dealer to have them taken care of and they gave me a brand new 2010 XLT Screw, 4.63v, 3.23(?) with only 20 miles on it. I drove this truck for 4 days and was impressed with how smoothly it shifted. When I got my Lariat back it was immediately obvious that the shifts are not the same. The 5.4 shifts are rougher, less consistent, and generally at lower RPMs. I have been mulling over what to do next. The biggest issues seems to be at the lower speeds with light throttle. Hmmmm.
my 09 Platinum has the surging problem, as well as a jerking/shudder between 1500-1900rpm, just prior to 6-5 downshift. The dealer has flashed the pcm twice, and nothing changes. These problems have been there since day one. I don't think they can fix it. It aggravates the hell out of me. The dealer thinks he can test drive and troubleshoot the truck driving from stop light to stop light, and you can't do that. You have to get the truck out on the road. If that programmer works I might try that
I was hoping someone posted a fix for this problem. Now that the temps have dropped my surge has returned, but it does clear after 5-10 minutes of driving. The truck only surged around 20-25 mph. My truck has a Edge CS programmer on it and that did not help any. Im still betting on its a issue with the torque converter locking and unlocking.
Can't speak to the cold issues, Arizona temps are just starting to get fall-like, but my PCM was just reflashed (allegedly) to cure a poor performing A/C system. Can't say for sure if the A/C works any better, but the transmission shifts better than it ever has. No more "hunting" when you accelerate from a stop while turning a corner. And, it is more willing to make a smooth downshift when you put your foot into it. Finally, if this actually fixes the A/C, I'll be one happy camper.

If you want to know what the fix is for the 1-2 or 2-1 shift look at the 2011 transmission changes.A one way clutch for 1-2 and 2-1 better shifts. The old C6 transmissions had this.I did not know they quit using this as I have not worked on transmissions for a long time.
The only time mine acts funny is when you are going slow and it is getting ready to shift but the incline gets steep and it is changing its mind in the middle of a change. Its only happened a few times so it does not trouble me.
I would say the only fix will be the changes that were made to the 2011.I dought ford will do that.

FYI, that fix (hard shifting) is for another fault of this transmission. The surging fault in this thread is different, at least in appearance.
I have noticed that the surging doesn't appear (or is unnoticed) when it's really cold. In Calgary now, it's -21C (-6F) over night I haven't noticed the surging in the mornings as I used to when it was only -5C (23F).
