Surging transmission when cold
Extended Warranty
CRAP ! ! !
I just got my '09 a couple of weeks ago and have been on this forum ever since reading all the postings. With everything I've been reading that people are having problems with ( seat mat'l loose, headliner hanging down etc etc) and this now, it looks like I'm going to get sucked into another $3,500 for an extended warranty. Occasionally I've noticed something strange when I've pulled out of our neighborhood onto the main road. Felt like a sliight hesitation.
Has anyone had any luck negotiating down the cost of their extended warranties?

the truck does have 5years 100,000 km powertrain warranty
i have stayed out out of this thread on purpose but i really have to say that i work for a very busy dealer, and work across from our trany guy, and i have yet to see one 09-10 F150 in his bay for any issue. i really think there is a lot of i heard about it so i have it.
the 6sp is a very different transmission it will do things and may feel different then the old 4sp.

When I tried out an 2010, with a 6 speed auto, after owning alot of Ford Trucks the first thing I noticed is the first gear is really short. My thoughts are that this is as a result of the 3.31 / 3.55 gears that seem to be the most common choices on dealer lots. 10 years ago the standard was 3.73 (today it is a pricey option) but with the push for higher MPG coupled with the desire for low end power I am thinking the first gear is really low and that may be what gives the feeling of a surge.
Deano, I wish you worked at one of my local dealerships. You sound like a reasonable person I could go on a test drive with that could tell me if my transmission shifts normal or weird. Unfortunately, I am stuck with people who have proven to me that they don't really care about customers.
Maybe I need to drive up to Canada to get good service? I tend to agree with the sentiments that the 6 speed just shifts differently and hopefully it is normal and won't strand me some where. At least I can hope.
As for Ford ESP warranties... google Ford ESP, you can find them for less than $1000.

Did some playing around with mine this weekend. The hesitation/surging occurs primarily in third gear on my truck. I ran it through 1st through D manually and it is only under moderate acceleration in third that I truly feel it (almost like a dead miss).
I have had the transmission TSB already and it did not correct it. This plus the hit in the *** every so often when you come to a stop is ruining what is a great truck to me.
Wish someone had a definitive answer. This tranny was in the Expeditions a year or two before, so I wonder what has changed to make this happen in our trucks?

Same here, I towed 200 miles with mine this weekend, and I am really getting sick of this shifting. I'm getting used to it, but I don't really want that to happen because I think something is really wrong. It shifts so rough sometimes that I wonder if it could be damaged. The TSB really didn't do much to resolve the situation, so I'm wondering what else to do at this point.
Have you considered that when the truck is warming up the RPM's are higher (up to apx 1300 RMP). You probably don't feel the surge in the lower gears because you are accelerating and its shifting above 1300 RPM. I think it might be surging because when the transmission shifts into neutral for that split second, the engine naturally wants to spin back up to 1300. Do you let your engine warm up before hitting the road.

That's all you should have to do unless you are in arctic (sub-zero) weather. In fact, the oil is fully circulated within 5 seconds of starting so you are good to go almost immediately. Just take it easy on the throttle until the coolant temperature starts to rise. If you have shifting problems they should be addressed. The truck is designed to shift cold and it shouldn't be overly harsh just because it's not warmed up yet. Of course a cold transmission feels firmer but it shouldn't make bad sounds.
i got rid of the hypertech after about 300 miles my trans starting going crazy slamming when it down shifted and crap my trans has been pretty good now with no programmer still slams into 2nd if i takeoff fast but i overall was not impressed with the hypertech
Since the weather warmed up mine really hasnt been doing the surging at all. The only thing I have noticed now is while warming up the 3rd to 4th gear shift is pretty firm at times. Also when coming to a stop the truck likes to downshift hard into first and it feels like im being pushed forward. I think im finally going to get a programmer and Im betting that this will fix all issues.
