Probably just estimated numbers. I doubt Ford would leak that info to Motortrend of all places before the public - that is, unless they don't want to take the fire directly. "Blame motortrend, it's their fault!"

For all the hype that is surrounding this truck there is no way that the 5.4 is making 310hp

i wouldn't be surprised if thats right. With the excellent torque curve the 5.4 puts out (especially once tuned) and the 6 speed tranny, i think most will be surprised with how well it'll get up and go.

I agree with mSal, I don't expect to see significant power increase with the 5.4 but the 6 speed will help. Ford probably wants the future engines to look that much better.

The 5.4 probably won't...but in a couple years when the Boss engines arrive, they will be up there.

Why would Ford overhaul the 5.4 when its getting scraped in a year and change? 310hp to the new 6 speed sounds bang on for an engine that is going to be obsolete in a year and a half... 2010 model year is the death of the 5.4 Triton!

Look at it this way too, if gas is going to be $4 a gallon or more, do you really want another 50-80 hp out of that engine?
To make more horsepower you must burn more fuel. With gas pricing high and getting higher, thats not a good thing.

You can make more power while saving fuel

yes you can make more power with out as much fuel.. search ECOBOOST.
they did make one minor change to the 5.4 that I have heard and that is utilizing open valve injection. that is as close to direct injection as you can get. it should be a slight boost in power and a slight improvement in mpg. to do that they may have utilized a new intake manifold and injectors, fuel delivery system ect.

there is a lot more to haveing power then a peak hp engine. anyone who races or builds will tell you gearing is VERY important. so I am extremely pleased to get another 2 gears. also look at tq #s and average hp and tq and at what rpm do you need to run to acheive them. and how long do the engines last. the 5.4 is actually a very good engine. don't get me wrong I so very strongly want mo powwa

also I do not believe the death of the 5.4

Those 'MotorTrend' numbers were discussed here some time ago.....the same thing applies, until there is something official from Ford it's all speculation.
