Cleaned it all out..

Making progress. Going to swap out water pump too.
there's a sound deadening "box" that surrounds the lower intake from the factory. mine had deteriorated and been eaten by critters too. not important.

any luck finding a front cover?

Hey, thanks for the look and the confirmation that its not needed to be replaced. Yes got a couple covers I am looking at, one in PA I am waiting to hear back from the guy and one on ebay that he lists as from a van, but I think it will fit my truck. I am trying to decide if I should take the power steering pump off or not, do you know? I pulled off the pulley and I cannot tell but I think I can leave the pump... May keep working and see what happens when I am ready to remove the cover.

Not sure what timing chain components to get. Usually go to Advance, but they dont seem to have them.... I am finding lots of rust on this truck.. more than I thought...

To answer my own question about removing the power steering pump, YES on this truck you MUST! The front two bolts attach to the timing cover, the top back on and the alignment pin to the block soo..... I didnt want to take the pump off because I was afraid I would snap off the bolts but they did break free. But what a PITA that thing was. Had to take the bottom line out of the pump.... 18mm I think it was... and that took a while... lol.... Only three bolts in my case the forth bolt has a locator pin that is a friction fit that made me think someone had sapped off a bolt but its off and out of the way! All the hoses are rusted and need replacing.... is there a tubing, aka rubber like but safe for power steering/transmission type fluid that can be used? I think every line has a section that has non metallic hose as part of the line because of where it has to go. The trans lines to the radiator are toast and have been patched... gonna do a better job there as well. Done, more pics tomorrow I hope....

Thanks for looking

Got a bit farther today but the rustiness of this vehicle is making things hard. That and the stupid small stud bolts on the valve covers.... grr...

SO here is a pic of the rusty power steering pump. Had to remove the line to get the last bolt out. Want to replace those lines anyway. Pump connects the timing cover and to the block, sooo... it had to come off.
That the next pic that shows that spot.

Here is a nice patch job for the trans lines to the cooler from the radiator. They all look bad so I am going to replace them, but may just to some type of hose and metal line. Is that a bad thing?

Not sure how I am going to get the remaining messed up stud bolts off he valve cover.

Also there is a tube that goes from the drivers side exhaust to I think its the egr valve OVER the valve cover.... That is gonna have to go, but damn that could be a big mess...

Starting to think I should have just rigged a pully or even just some jb weld over that hole and let it all eat.
I bet I will have at least a grand in this thing before its over. Then the rusty thing has to pass inspection.

In for a penny in for a grand!

too late now but just for future reference, while you're right that the p/s pump has to come off in order to remove the front cover, you didn't need to take the pulley off of it or disconnect any of the lines.

two of the three bolts are easily accessible, and the third can be removed with a wrench. then you just set the intact pump off to the side.

but hey, at least now you can replace those rusted p/s lines!

Yes you are soo right, I did not want to take that pully off, but I could not get my ratchet wrench in that small space. I think my wrench was too thick or the hose was bent etc... But taking off the pully was not bad, and it helped me see the whole thing better. Thanks for that suggestion though.
And yes I should just replace all the lines and hoses. Sorta like do it now or do it later, and later will be much harder! I sourced the main pressure hose and it was like $108 bucks so I am still looking. That one almost has to be like the original with the crimped areas etc. Not worth messing with a hose clamp blowing off lol.

Hope to get that cover off today, if I can get the rusted studs out of the head.....

SO did not get as far as I wanted, yes I am slow. Got one valve cover off. The damn tiny 8mm bolts are toast. Had to drive a 7mm and even a 6mm on many to just get them off. I think I found some other bolts to use.....
THat big tub from the exhaust to the egr valve was a Bixxx. I Think the nut was a 26mm. Dont have that wrench in my tools,,,, yet.... used an adjustable wrench carefully and got it off....and then the one valve cover....

Got one of the cam holding tools in place as well.

Got most of the other bolts off the passenger side, but got called away to look at a job.
Will hit that job tomorrow, so wont get much done on the truck I dont think.

Howdy!
I am making progress! I got all the covers off, including the oil pan. That was a job, but its all off and its soaking in some simple green for the reinstall. I need to source all the parts, working on that. However I think I hit a snag.... I think I got the wrong timing cover. The flanges for the power steering pump dont line up with the old cover. and if I uses the holes on the new cover they pump wont ling up on the block.... and the flanges seem short compared to the old one.... Any one know if the cover I got, the one with the 69 sticker can be made to work, or do I keep looking for another used one? THX

Looking at this kit, includes oil pump, anyone buy from these guys? https://www.carparts.com/timing-chai...14-01?&vehicle[submodel]=XLT&vehicle[model]=F-150&vehicle[make]=Ford&vehicle[year]=2004

The advance auto kit, no oil pump Is way pricey https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...ming+Chain+Kit

Not sure which way to go.... Truck has 227k on it... ran good I thought......

Don't think you're gonna get that cover to work easily. Moving the pump up means longer hoses, and possibly other fitment issues

Good luck with this project, gonna be a bunch of labor, but hopefully worth it in the long run
