Engine not Running Right
Engine not Running Right
I have an 08 f150 5.4l 130,000 miles I'm having an issue with the truck sputtering and stalling it doesn't happen all the time it also isn't throwing a check engine light how can I fix this problem
Plugs / COPS
I experienced a similar issue with my 5.4 thats at about 200k miles. The most likely cause is a spark plug going bad or a coil on plug (COP) going bad. If the ECU doesn't register enough misfires that are causing the sputtering, it won't throw a code.
How many miles has it been since you replaced your spark plugs?
When my truck began doing it I was nearing a spark plug change, so I changed the plugs, and it went away. Plugs are cheaper than COPS, so I would suggest going this route first unless you recently changed the plugs.
But having a bad spark plug will make the COP work harder to get spark across worn plugs because the gap gets larger. Working harder = more likely to fail.
After about 5 months after changing my plugs and having no issue, the truck started sputter again but less severely. After about a month of driving the truck it finally threw a code for the COP on cylinder 1. Changed the COP, all good.

While plugs can be the issue... I would look at the VVT solenoids or the Cam Phasers.
My '06 after running highway speeds and then slowing down would sound like a diesel and shake and rattle. Only giving a little gas would snap it out of it.
I replaced cam phasers, timing chains, VVT solenoids, and while I was in there added a high volume oil pump and water pump.
All of my problems are gone and my truck runs like new at 185,000 miles!
This guy is amazing... Check these links for more info:
Feel free to PM me if you need more info.
Cheers!
