Plugs, I guess it's time ........

2007 FX4 with 5.4 3valve, 62,xxx miles, Driving over mountain 2 days ago, low engine speed, truck in OD, light grade, felt a couple misses … no codes, no more misses either. Was a very warm day but truck was only running about 195.

Ordered 8 SP546 plugs but recalled that I ordered and received 8 SP515s last summer, so cancelled the SP546s. I'g like to go with SP546s but SP515s are in it now (OEM) so I guess these will be ok for a few years. I thought they would work in our '08 Mustang, but it'd a 4.6 and calls for SP509 or equivilant.

Have Lisle tool & the nickel anti seaze already. She's also due for oil/filter change so guess I'll do it all.

The SP-515 have been superseded by the SP-546 by Ford. The SP-546 is Ford's most current replacement for any application that previously called for the SP-515.

Yep, I saw that when I ordered. Got the oil done … and Filter, plugs have to wait for now. Never missed a beat since those two that day either.

If you are about to embark on this journey of random misfires, this might be a useful read: https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...s-misfire.html

I've never had a plug (SP515) break since this exercise (which I do now at every plug change). My truck is north of 235k miles and it will usually get up to 50 - sometimes 80 drive cycles without OBDII registering a single misfire.

Save some money maybe. The coat hanger wire I made to finish mine up the first time - would probably work just fine by itself with a few extra swabings with B-12 Chemtool.

It has the advantages of not getting carbon dust (and potentially brush bristles) into the cylinder - OR the brush coming off the handle and falling inside.

Which ever technique you use, I am absolutely convinced this is a primary source of the misfire problems with this engine. --- good luck.

You're talking about the FIRST time I did a plug change (about 5 of 8 broke). I wanted to clean my 45 and then finish it off!!!

Cheers!
