Leaking rear pinion

Hey guys,
Had a few drops on the garage floor and sure enought its up front of the pumpkin. Its been parked til the other day so i dont know how long ots been dripping and i cant get to the shop til Saturday.
Gonna check the level. The fill screw is 1/2 or 3/8 on top the pumpkin?
When i put my finger in and its more the 1/4 inch down, is it ok just too top it off with 75/140 gear lube.
Oh and if its really dry does Auto Zone and places sell friction modifier or just the dealer? Thanks

75w140 synthetic is the specified lube. Genuine Motorcraft friction modifier is what's recommended, but there are others out there.

1/4" down from max won't hurt anything until you get to a shop to have it repaired.(unless it's in 3 month)..a couple day doesn't matter.

This thread will tell you everything you need to know about replacing it. It's not too hard if you have some tools, and some rental tools from an auto parts store. I did mine a few years ago and saved myself a ton!

If it isn't leaking that bad you can just keep an eye on the level and ignore the leak.

Valvoline 75/140 synthetic comes with the friction modifier in it as well as others. And the auto parts stores do carry the modifier separate.

They do sell friction additive at O'reilley's...

I've had the leak for quite some time now...just keep checking the level...

Aqua - I merged your two threads. Please don't start multiple threads on the same subject. It leads to confusing responses that can waste your time. (And, you got one!)

Didnt mean to start another, my fingers were click happy!
Anyhow, checked the fluid and it was right at the top, so it just started dripping. Dealer wants $272 for the pinion seal and top the fluid off. Guess I'll drop it off next Saturday. Thanks fellas

It's better to get it fixed than leaving it.

Good choice on the dealer -- at least you know it will get done right and back to spec.
