P0022 Engine Code

Hey everybody! New to the forum, just got my first truck, 2008 Ford F-150 FX2 Sport SuperCrew with a 5.4L V8. I bought it with 124K miles, which I didn't have a problem with because I know these engines have a good reputation for hitting 200K+, when properly maintained of course. Well, the day after I bought the truck the engine started "knocking" and shaking vigorously after running for a little while. After turning off the engine and starting it back up the noise and shake goes away, but come back eventually. Just yesterday the check engine light came on and I got code P0022 when I hooked it up to a code reader. The truck is back at the dealer now and I have the option to walk away from the deal, which I would hate to do because I love the truck, but I don't know how serious this problem is. Does anybody have experience with the P0022 code? Is this an indication that the engine in nearing its end or could I still get plenty of miles out of it? Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Camshaft position sensor. I would walk. Ford is offering $4500 back on new trucks and $5500 if you qualify for Ford credit

Walk. This is just the beginning of problems with the VCT and cam chain systems. If you want a Ford truck, stay away from the 3 valve engines.

Thanks for the advice guys. It kills me to walk from this truck because I really fell in love with it.

If the dealer would rather let you out of the deal rather than fix and warranty it, it's time to back out because they know something.

5.4s are not bad ..... many run very long lives .... but you have to use good maintenance habits, (MC filters and 5w20 or 5w30 oil are in my plan). I know of a couple over 200K, saw one come into my store with 269K on oem plugs and he wondered why the codes were so numerous .... he is always on the road and he was thinking of just trading it but local Ford specialist shop went over it and two months later he was back in my store and thanked me for the referral. I also have seen one 5.4 that went 417,000 miles before giving up.

I also know of some who come in and no matter what the books say, no matter what I say politely, they are gonna run 10w30 or even 20w50 in their truck whether it's new or old and they sometimes are picky as to brand, but some just want the monthly oil change special and they don't care about whose filter it includes. I have one customer that has a near new 5.0 F150, he uses a MC filter and often, MC 5w30 oil .... but he always always throws in a can of STP. I know how long it takes to put a can of room temp STP in .... like molasses.

When you buy a used vehicle, you could get one of mine maybe, maybe one even better (yeah, right!) .... or one of theirs?

Well I bought it from Autonation, which has a 3 day money back guarantee, so they have to take it back if thats what I decide.

I went to check on it today and I was told "It's Fixed". I was told it was just a timing issue and once the engine re-learned the timing, the problem was "fixed". He told me no parts needed to be replaced. He also said the "knocking" noise I was hearing was just "detonations" inside the motor and no harm was being done to the engine. I still a bit skeptical about their diagnosis, what do you all think? The service manager is driving it for the weekend to make sure the issue doesn't return and no other issues come up. He said he should put about 100 miles on it over the weekend.

He's blowing smoke up your ***. That engine has phaser and oil pressure issues. Walk.

You asked for suggestions and most of us replied you should walk. You ask us again, and surprise.....we didn't change our minds. WALK! They are trying to get you to inherit a money pit that they will make off of you. Drop the keys off and go buy a new truck.

I bought a 07 with 78k on it
PAINT FALLING OFF TRUCK
REAR LS DIFF WAS LOCKING UP
WINDSHIELD LEAKED
CROSS THREADED OIL DRAIN PLUG
BURNT OUT DASH LIGHTS

Automation is a joke don't waste any more of your time, or stop asking us for advice.
