Tranny Service

Truck is at 95k right now. I will be doing 100k mile service soon obviously. I'm wondering what to do with the tranny. I understand not to do the flush due to the use of solvents and detergents but that's all the dealerships talk about. Or they say they drop and pan and change the filter. What exactly is the fluid exchange? I understand they pull the fluid from the dipstick through the whole system. Torque converter, cooler and pan. Once the fluid is pulled, is the pan dropped and the filter changed then new fluid pumped in? Where do I go with this?

Get a fluid exchange with a machine. It's the same machine they do a flush with, but it's used in the passive mode. It taps into the cooler lines and the exchange is done with the engine running, the internal pump is what moves the fluid. No pan drop. I'd take it to an independent shop or even a quick lube joint if the dealer insists on pumping their high-profit solvents through it.

I wish mine would have lasted that long. I'm at 98,000 right now and had to drop the tranny and rebuild it at 88,000.

Ideally, a pan drop to clean off the magnet and wipe out the pan, then the passive flush. I got my truck with 44K on it and do a pan drop every year since. I got the pan with the drain plug (F8UZ-7A194-AA) to save on the drain mess.

PS: OP, I like your '94!

I'm going to drop my pan, go have a fabricator install a drain plug in it, clean the magnet, change the screen, and re-install and pour the necessary quarts of Mercon V ATF. Then, in 15k - 20k miles i'll pull the plug, and replace what pours out. I'm too chicken to have any dealer or transmission shop service it, however I don't want to neglect it any longer.

$50 for the OEM drain plug pan was cheaper than a welder. Only a couple times in my life have I needed a welder. ...like right now, actually!!! Arghh.
