These Trucks Are Garbage

If you don't believe me you are in denial. I want so bad to like mine, but I just can't. It has been in the shop every week in the last two months. It probably still has the cam phaser problem. The rattle I hear is probably the timing chain slapping the front cover. Now I am getting less than 10mpg. I am a patient man, and I understand that anything mechanical will have failures every now and then, but this is unacceptable.

Even if the motor was good, I would still have issues. A truck that lists for over $40,000 new should not have welds with porosity on 30% of the frame. On a bumpy road the thing rides worse than the 87' Ramcharger I once owned. At least the body panels and doors on the Ramcharger didn't rattle. Go above 55mph and it sounds like something is going to fall off my F150. The moon roof leaks in the car wash, power windows work intermittently, my rear bumper is starting to rust out already, hard to get out of 4-wheel low, etc, etc, etc.

I had big plans for it: was going to get the bed sprayed with Linex next month, Magnaflow exhaust, Volant CAI, better tires. But now I’m just going to leave it stock. First $20,000 for my truck takes it. I’m buying a high end car. I’ll just rent the truck at Home Depot when I need to haul stuff or have it delivered. If I need to move I’ll just call Mayflower.

These trucks (GM, Ford, Dodge, Toyota) nowadays are built so cheaply it makes me sick. Aluminum heads and blocks, thin sheet metal on the body, plastic everything. I love when people order the Chrome Package. It’s just ABS plastic, and it looks so trashy.

You got a lemon man. Plain and simple. I love my truck and I've had my share of issues. It happens

OP,

If you think that a blanket statement like "these trucks are garbage" holds any logic when hundreds of thousands of them are on the road and have been trouble free for hundreds of thousands of miles, then you, sir, are crippled to high for crutches.

You didn't mention how many miles are on the truck. I had a 2005 that had 180K on the clock when I traded it, and it never gave me a second's trouble. Looked, ran, and rode like new until the day I traded it.

Are you unaware that, from time to time, "lemons" get into the marketplace? Instead of insinuating that we who have had great experiences with our trucks are "in denial" that they are actually "garbage", why don't you face the possibility that YOU are in denial of the fact that you just got a bad one. Unfortunately, it happens.

I noticed that your future mods list included a Volant WAI, but it did NOT include a proper tuning device with custom tunes for said. Makes me wonder just how much you know about these vehicles and the intricacies of modern PCMs, sensors, tuning, etc. Looks like you'd be better served with that '87 Ramcharger you mentioned.

Right about now, you're probably thinking that this response was unwarranted. So, I'll put it into perspective for you: You come to a Ford truck site not to seek help or advice about the issues you're having. Instead, you make a blanket statement that "these trucks are garbage" and proceed to insinuate that we're in denial if we feel differently.

What did you REALLY expect here?

I say, "Good riddance" to you, sir. Go buy a Titan or something.

Edit: You say this has been going on for two months and that you've been getting less than 10 mpg. Just about a month ago, you posted: https://www.f150online.com/forums/4939280-post4.html ...... Which is it?

Mine is the same body style as yours but four years older. Wife has been on my case to get the new 2014, but I just can't part with mine; it's an amazing, quiet, and comfortable vehicle.

Sorry yours is a Lemmon, but they're not all that way!

huh... then why did my 2004 run just fine for 8+ years with no problems? It is probably still running fine... I traded it in for a new 2013

... and thousands (probably millions) more have the same good luck.

Could it be proper maintenance that makes the difference? Or maybe you got a bad one? Did you buy it new? They way you talk about it I think you bought it used. Who knows what the previous owner did to it.

The truck only has 31,000 miles on it and I baby it. A Volant CAI does not require a custom tune. I contacted them and was informed that it is unnecessary. If a tune was required I would use one. The 87' Ramcharger is an example. I have owned many vehicles, some with over 350,000 miles on them, and I have never experienced issues as serious as this truck has. I understand that everyone else's F150 might be great, but they certainly could be manufactured a lot better. I am looking at the truck objectively. Obviously I hurt your feelings; for that I apologize. Maybe Mike Rowe can give you a hug to make you feel better. A Titan would probably be no better. I might have to find a 79' F-150 that I can restore. That year was the best in my opinion.

the rust is normal, they rusted worse than that in previous years. Too bad you weren't down south, we drive our vehicles forever. Moon/sun roofs are problematic, I would never get one. Only real problem with your truck is the cam phasers. I can agree with that.

Yeah. I was getting higher millage and now just recently it has slipped to less than 10mpg. I have not changed my driving habits and the weather is relatively the same. It keeps getting worse every time I fill up. I don’t expect great millage with a truck, but now it’s comparable to my old Ramcharger.

Sorry to hear about your luck.....

But anytime the maf is relocated out of the stock transfer location a custom tune should be used.....of course volant is going to tell you that....they don't want their product back.....next time ask a tuner....

Oh, well if a Volant representative said it wouldn't require a custom tune, that's good enough fer me! They want to sell their crap. If they told people the truth (that their crap is actually HARMFUL unless proper tuning is in place), I imagine they wouldn't sell much of their crap. See?

Hurt feelings are fer pussies. You didn't hurt my feelings. But don't expect those of us who know better not to call you out. See, at first you said "these trucks are garbage" and "if you don't believe me you are in denial". Then when a few of us let you know you were wrong, you say "I understand that everyone else's F150 might be great". See the flaw and contradiction in reasoning here?

You have 31K on the truck and have had issues. Many of us have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on basically the same truck with little to no issues. By comparison, it sure sounds like a lemon to me. So why not approach it from that direction instead of insinuating all Ford trucks are garbage and WE are the fools for not sharing your opinion?

Sorry to hear about your issues. Without a doubt your having more troubles than you should - and I would be upset too! I have to agree with Dewser that the blanket statement is a little off - maybe it should have been titled with "This" or "My" vs "These". Never the less, I have had my F150 for 5 years now, bough brand new and have had the following issues:

Replaced Power Steering Pump
Pillar Handle broke

Other than than that its pretty much been GTO. Good luck, I hope you can get your issues worked out or get out from under it.

I bought it used from a Ford dealer. It’s a certified pre-owned vehicle. Yeah, who knows what the previous owner did to it? I'm sure it was never used to tow or haul anything though. The bed doesn't even have a scratch in it. I was thinking about buying a new one, but this one seemed like a good deal with the 100,000 mile warranty and only 29,000 miles on it.

I put 135,000 trouble free miles on my 2005 and have 51,000 trouble free on my 2011. I could not ask for more.

BTW, you DO need a tune with the Volant. Put the stocker back on, disconnect the battery for 30 min to reset the PCM and see if the mileage improves any.

Or, you can follow the writeup in the Articles and How To section and clean the contacts for free. Fixes the majority of them. They get corroded.
