In "the good old days" it was possible to do something like this if you were half way handy and could fabricate things like motor mounts, etc. These days however, there's so much electronic stuff that needs to be properly integrated that it's almost impossible to do. But, as others have said, anything can be done for cubic bucks.
My advice to your brother would be to save his money for a newer truck with the 5.0 already in it. First, it's going to be cheaper and more reliable. Second, you won't have a hacked up truck that sort of runs to try to sell someday.

Sure it can be done.
Going to all the truck shows out here in Texas, you see trucks with INSANE & CRAZY motor swaps that are running 100% with no problem and I think it's pretty damn cool.
Like they all said above, with the $$$$, it's possible.
And yea, the 5.4 3V would be possible, but with the Coyote & new motors out, if you're going to spend the $$$, go ahead and go for the best bang for your buck, which IMO is either the 5.0 or the 6.2 which would be BADA** in a Single Cab Ford, but alot of fabrication, wiring & DINERO needed for any swap! 5.4 3Vs are just not even in comparison with the new lineup, at all.

This guy swapped a 5.0 in place of his 4.6 in a Sport Trac Adrenalin:

From what I understand, the swap with the least expense and headache is to a 5.4 2v. We have a member here, IntRiniTy, that has done it. Your best option for HP/$ would just be to turbo the 4.6L. I wouldn't raise the boost as high as these guys did with a stock motor, but should give you an idea of what needs to be done. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...8/viewall.html

yea truck is paid off for, that adrenaline coyote build is pretty sick with the a six speed manual tranny, i love those little trucks i can only imagine what its like with the coyote in there, and we are going for the cool factor in his truck, he is doing a full saleen body kit on it so the truck is gonna look fast but that 4.6 is anything but it ran a best 16.4 pass at the drag strip with a k&n cold air intake, and a flowmaster exhaust, with a superchips canned tune in it, after he is done with the exterior he is looking into either swaping the 4.6 with a 5.4lt 3V with either running a saleen or whipple blower on it, or trying to do a coyote swap in there which would be very cool, costly but cool
