sluggish acceleration from a stop
I think I'm good now. I put a new MAF in and it seems to be running smooth and running at full power. The shop put their computer on the truck and all the possible causes (vacuum leak, O2 sensor, injectors, etc...) were pretty much eliminated by either me or them, so the MAF was the only untested thing left. We pretty much made an educated guess that the MAF was causing all this and it seems like we got it right. I just hate to go to the dealer. They're so expensive, and they rip off my friends whenever they go so I just avoid going

Glad you got it sorted.
Install the tune again and report back.

yeah "we". it's a pretty informal shop. I just stand around and watch them work in other people's stuff til it's my turn. and the guy went over the checklist of possible causes with me and I had already eliminated all except maf and vacuum leak and they couldn't find a vacuum leak. so maf was really the last thing left. I'll drive it the rest of the day with 87 performance tune on and post back on how it does
Most dealers are not ripoffs. Yes, their hourly rates are high, but they have equipment and training that independent shops don't have. You don't have to have them actually fix it - you can pay for a diagnosis. The WDS probably would have pinned it down to the MAF. A WDS here is menu priced at $79.95, the hourly rate for most work is $85.
Now - are you gonna get that POS K&N out of there and put a dry filter in so you don't mess up your new MAF?

Stock Motorcraft, Purolator, or Wix (NOT a Fram) paper filter at any parts store, or order an Amsoil filter. It's dry and cleanable. We have some Amsoil dealers on the forum, I buy from Galaxy.
