how many miles is too many??
my dream truck is a 2007-08 king ranch green.. so ive been looking and i found 2 that im interested in.. one has 27,000 miles in excellent condition for 30,000$ and the other one has 92,000 in excellent condition for 22900$ both are awesome trucks but im just curious how many miles are too many? ive always grown up with trucks with miles i didnt even know what they where but since im older and have a son im just trying to be smart here.. of course lower miles the better but will i suffer by getting a truck with 90,000 miles?

x2. there was a guy on here who bought a truck with around 52k and the motor went on him because of sludge build up. higher miles is a crap shoot man. mine had 152k when i got it and it burns oil, leaks antifreeze, and needs manifolds after 10k. go for lower miles.

I'ld spend the extra $$$ if I had it for the 27K "Dream Truck" if that's what it was, as there's a greater chance I might keep that one 20 years while Junior grows and goes to school and all that which means less need to trade newer again until he's out of schol and growd, then he can help you restore your "Dream Truck" for retirement.
If the 90K truck is more along the lines of what I want and if I knew the PO and knew it had been well maintained, it'ld certainly be in the running as to get to 90K, you know that one had it's oil changed a few times. The 27K? Well, you can go 27K with just topping off and go that far .... as we have seen!
Look at the oil filters too.
Decisions decisions ..... make life "interesting".

Well, if you narrow it to specific markets, both are greatly overpriced here where I live, but some other areas of the country .... I don't know.
I recall seeing 06 and 07 KRs for right at 30-32K when I found my 07 FX4 in August 09. I know KRs draw good money here still. I recall after I bought, that prices actually crept up as the great Ameriacn "rip off taxpayer" ... "Cash for Clunkers" ... deal robbed Americans of used vehicles and taxes.

When looking for my stang & f150, I saw vehicles under 30k miles with clean car faxes I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It all depends on the vehicle/(1) owner in question. I hate buying from dealers, because normally service records have disappeared, and you don't really know how it's been maintained.
I bought my f150 with around 23k and was a total mystery other than being tagged repeatedly, but once I saw it, I knew it was the real deal.
The mustang had almost 80k, but the guy took it to the dealer ALL the time (that was in the carfax), and it was unmolested.
for 8k you can buy large mechanical parts as mentioned, but you can't undo butts sliding over seats, fingers wearing paint off of trim, etc. It's all the little crap that breaks once you roll up on 100k that's annoying.

If you're paying KBB or NADA value on a vehicle, then you're paying too much. Time and patience are keys. I looked for mine for a while. KBB had it (private seller) valued at $15,500 (43k miles) bone stock. I bought it for 14000 with about 4k in upgrades (wheels/tires, stereo, floormats, etc...) I've seen some pretty nice ones on craigslist and autotrader for good prices. Just know what you want, search and wait, and then jump on it when you find it.
I personally won't buy from a dealer, and always sell vehicles myself. Too much money lost by trading.

Well I see they sold, but since your still looking I'll give my opinion in case you get into the same situation again.
As a couple others have said, look at how much you are saving and then think realistically what worst case could go wrong with the cheaper truck. For Example, if you would have blown the engine and/or transmission in that cheaper truck, the $8k probably would have covered the repairs. Now that is worst case. There is also the case that nothing goes wrong and you save a bunch of money.
When comparing trucks like this I would ask about maintenance and such if you are dealing with former owner. Even if they don't keep detailed records, you can usually tell by the way they talk if they kept up and know what they are talking about.
One more suggestion. Open your search up to a wider area if possible. When I bought my truck I was rather specific like you. Search autotrader nationwide. You may find a good private party deal. Sure, it might cost you a couple hundred bucks and a weekend trip to go get the truck, but it could be worth it. Just a thought.
Good luck with the search. I remember when I was in your shoes. Can be frustrating sometimes. Stick with it though!

Just like jimc2004 suggested, it is definitely worth it to broaden your search. I spent several months looking for a my truck and I knew exactly what I wanted. I was dead set on a yellow FX4 Supercrew with a sunroof and under 50k. First off there are very few yellow FX4's around because they only made them in 04', fewer with low miles and even less with a sunroof. I ended up finding the truck I wanted in Santa Fe, NM and I jumped on it. I know it's a long way to go for a truck but I'm more than happy with my purchase.
Check Autotrader frequently especially if you know exactly what you want. Good luck truck hunting!
