2004 F150 Half Shafts (spins in 2wd when trucks on)

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 5.4L and with one front tire off the ground, truck running, when you spin the tire the half shaft turns with the tire, it does this on the left and the right when I have either off the ground. I did it with the truck running because I heard that when it is running it disengages the hubs. My question is why do my half shafts turn with the wheel in 2wd with the truck running?

To save me thr trouble of re-typing all of this stuff, take a look at this post:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...then-some.html

What you're going to find is that your front half shafts should not spin in 2WD with the engine running. They are because the IWE's have not disengaged.

That was at 10:11 PM.

Just a minute ago, at 10:10 PM you posted in the other thread.

How did you find out it wasn't fixed in just a minute?

Anyway, maybe jack a wheel up and rotate the tire backwards to make sure no "binding" remains? Also, might just slightly rev the engine and let off to raise vacume signal a little higher so it pulls harder?

.

I thought the bad check valve was it, but its not. I got vacuum to the wheels now but the hubs will still not release. They are stuck in the engaged position.

I tried the back and forth tire motion...no luck half shafts still spin, I even drove around town, stopped and checked it, they still both spin, its like the hubs seized to the actuator but its the same on both right and left tires.

You mean when you reach under there and grab them, they spin?

Sounds like your IWE's have locked up. Rare, but possible. Replacing them is not a huge job if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. It will also save you around $500 in dealer labor.

Before I replaced them though, I'd apply some serious vacuum (manually) at the line going into the IWE while rocking the wheel forward and back - to see if it frees them up.

And here's how to replace them:

try pulling your IWE's off...may have got some corrosion in there and not letting em disengage...seems like I remember reading something about how some of these hubs were able to ingest water?...maybe that has something to do with it...

They spin because they lost vacuum. Read the thread ^ to diagnose your cause!

Ah grasshopper, but it was I who took the trouble to read all of your posts and use the search function to look up what are arguably the two most complete threads ever posted up here on how to diagnose your problem. I then posted links to those threads in an attempt to help you. And who was it that did this first for you? You're very welcome.
