difference between 05 5.4 and 08 5.4

What is the overall difference between the 5.4 in the 05 f150 and the 08 f150? They seem to idle different and the 08 came with more power. why is this? Is there any updates for the 05 5.4 ECM? Can you interchange the injectors from an 08 to an 05? They dont seem to be as loud and they dont sound like a diesel idling in the drive thru.

The injectors that came in an 05 are different than the ones in an 08. The 05 trucks had some injector troubles and there was at least one bulletin that covered them. I don't remember what the remedies were but I do remember they extended the warranty (to100k I believe) on them.

An 08 shouldn't have any noticeable power than a properly running. 05. The injectors on the newer trucks seem to be quieter to me. As for interchangeability, I don't know.

My previous truck was a 2007 XLT 5.4 I traded her at 48 K miles for my 2008 Harley Davidson loaded crew cab! It had 32K miles when I bought her. Two years later with 42K miles on her I swear the 08 5.4 makes a tad more power but seems to run much smoother. I also noticed that my plug cops are brown which means the 08 has the easy to change plugs due to the updated head design. All the more reason shes a keeper!

If you are fortunate to have a mid - late 08 then chances are you have COP number 8L3E one piece 12mm plug heads.

Also from what I can tell they have three types of phasers. The later having the timing marks integrated into the L&R designation.

Power wise, the new body claims 320BHP, 04-08 claims 300BHP. Iam sure this is achieved by tweaking the PCM.

The 16mm and 12mm plug heads look the same to me. Well maybe they MIC out different.

Reason I askis I came across 5 new Motorcraft injectors for 07-08 for $9each. Figure I could pay full price for 3 more and swap them out on my '06. They come in tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply.

I just went outside with my flashlight, I do see 8L3E on the cops with the brown boot! I swear this 2008 5.4 3v makes a tad more smoother power than my 2007 5.4 3v! I guess I got lucky! Like I stated she's a keeper for many reasons other than being a Harley Edition!

5.4 yes. Trust me as I've used the 07M08 Ford Customer Satisfaction program.

I have an 04 supercab FX4 and an 08 Reg Cab FX4 and 100% agree with you. I have the newer 08 and I think it's all in the tranny. I think the shift points, pressure and possible the overdrive in the 08 are much better. I don't have near the power loss once it shifts into OD. The 08 was much snappier in stock form than the 04 in stock form.
I have the new plugs and they are still a pain in the *** to reach with a socket on #'s 3,4,8. Also NGK makes plugs for that newer 08, I am running them.

Well I have a 09 motor in my 06. I have never got it to run right. It has sat for about a year with it's latest issue. There was a guy on here that got it running fine with no issues but he is either much smarter then me or much luckier!!

Who installed your motor? Maybe you need to get your PCM reflashed or get a tune?
