engine shut off when driving help!

Hey guys sorry if I'm short I'm posting from my blackberry.. I have 2005 f150 lariet with 51,000 miles and keep it in good shape oil etc. Have leveling kit and 35 bfg mt. Long story short I was turning off a road and my engine turned off and lost steering and was to avoid a wreck and pulled over. All electronics worked and ac. It wouldn't recrank 2 times I tried. I let it sit 5 mins while I checked everything and everything was fine. I tried to crank and it worked fine after sitting. I went home and it cranked perfectly and have driven 80miles no issues. I searched all over the web and only found 3 people to have this happend and ford dealer computer test found nothing wrong. They replaced many senors, fuel pump and filter with no luck. Test showed nothing wrong and they still have it happen. I bought it new at age 15 and have it paid for now and love it to death and worked years to buy my own/first truck. I'm not bashing ford by the way! Since the other peoples issue is the SAME as mine without a correction should I just save my money on test and fixing other things to find the problem and just trade it in for a f250? I farm some and pull so a diesel would b good to have. I'm taking it to the dealership where I go to college at to have them run a test on monday to see if there's anything to do. I only have 51,000 miles and have some problem already. Short on driverside door and bad window switches, 7pin trailer hookup doesn't work on right side trailer lights, have an unknown noise that happens ever so often when cranking that is so loud with a metal grinding sound and replaced start which helped some but didn't fix it, and at some point I will need new spark plugs, and now this new problem really makes me think I got a bad lemon and should just move on to a diesel. What can I do with the engine problem? Its very unsafe and scares me a lot that I have no idea when the engine may shut off again. I think instead of spending the money to try and fix this I may be better off saving my money since the other few people that have this problem cannot find a fix. Thanks a lot and sorry its typed wrong and short since I'm on my phone. What may be the problem with the engine shutting off and losing power steering/braking? I still have electrical power and ac which means battery is fine given that its only a month old. Thanks

It could be an issue with the electronic throttle, and it may not ever happen again.

I agree. I replaced air filter and fuel filter a minute ago and I'm about cut open the old fuel filter to see the inside. I'm just really worried when and if this happens again. It may be a simple fix but I really don't want to gamble with this problem bc I know that if someone was at the turn I was I would have been in a nasty wreck. When power steering goes out its way harder than I thought it would be to turn these big tires.

(Slapping my forehead)

How bout checking the fuel system reset. Directions in Manual. Happened often in my 03 Ranger.

It cuts fuel off to the engine in the event of a roll over but sometimes goes off just because it's mainly plastic and probably made in Mexico.

Did your CEL light or wrench light come on your dash? I had the same problem happen to me and it turned out to be my TPS sensor. I'm also having a problem with my Driver Side Window switches. Gonna be my second time replacing.

The one thing that comes to mind being that you have one of the newer trucks is that many of them are experiencing corrosion on the fuel pump controller module. Not 100% sure because I have an older truck, but I remember reading its underneath the truck near the spare tire in the back and that many people are having problems with the wires or actual electrical unit corroding. You should check that as it seems that when this happens its common for the trucks to quit while running and then run again later.

As for the grinding noise when cranking, I have a 2000, so I'm not certain they're the same although they should be, but I had that grinding noise a while back. It turned out to be the gear teeth on the flywheel got ground down by the starter. Replaced the flywheel and I haven't had a problem ever since.

Good Luck,

- Erik

Thank you so much for the reply Erik. I'll check that out. As for the noise I thought the same thing, but my mechanic wanted to start off with the starter and go from there. He put a new starter in and it helped the problem, but it didnt cure it. It happend yesterday at the gas station and causes the loudest noise. Should've seen the faces of some people looking at me. Anyone else got an idea as for the engine shutting off?

TPS=Tire Pressure Sensor. Damn, that's some scary stuff! I hope you find the cause.

I don't have a tire pressure thing like when my tires get low, I don't have a light that comes on to inform me, or so I think.

my truck did this as well when i put on the 35's, i may be dumb but with everything running at the same time you may be pulling too much juice and when your power steering is working too hard you lose rpm's and it drops under 350 and dies. Mine did this for weeks and i could figure it out i just got really good at kicking it in N and staring it really fast, haha. well on friday i did the GOTTS mod to my intake and i also have an edge programmer and i raised the idle rpm +60 where it is idleing around 500-700 rpms and have not had the problem since then. It got so bad that when i would brake too quicly or drop down into 1 gear, it would die. hope some of this helps

o and ive also run 2 cycles of marvel mystery oil in 2 full tanks of gas and ive noticed its been firing better

I have this problem too. It has died on me about 10 times over the last year I'd say.

I did a search on here recently and I found a post that has the same problem, the guy cleaned his throttle body and supposedly it corrected the problem. I'm inclined to start here because these trucks have a few sensors in the TB that deal with the idle. It has the throttle sensor and also the idle air control sensor(I think it's a stepper motor controlled by the ECM). I'm going to clean this whole assembly this week.

I don't think it's fuel related because it runs fine and doesn't sputter at all, and runs like a champ at all other times. It just happens when the engine is clost to idle. Almost like an older car with a real dirty or defective IAC valve, but of course on our trucks there is no IAC it's all electronic.

No, the TPS is the throttle position sensor. The tire pressure monitor is TPMS.

Go get your codes pulled with an OBD2 scanner. Unless you are in California or Canada, Autozone does this as a free service.

I went to autozone and they said their scanner will only work if there is a check engine light or something to that effect. Would it be better to just go to the dealer and have them run the test on my computer?
