You're lucky as hell you're only getting 5 days. Two local cops were stopped for DUI here and they were terminated. I'd imagine that it's not easy to get back into law enforcement after being let go for DUI, not to mention the fact that jobs aren't exactly plentiful right now. I've had a DUI, so I know what a pain in the *** it is, glad you and your passenger are OK.

btw, what was his explanation for grabbing the wheel in the first place?

thats a real bummer wade. good to see that your truck held up and no one had to really pay(except for your truck RIP). good luck with getting everything straightened out.

Wade, I'm sorry for what happened but glad you have learned from it. We are not given anything we cannot handle.

It's refreshing to see someone man up and take responsibility for their actions but, 5 day suspension? That's it? Boy, it's good to have a badge.

How much punishment would a civilian get for the same thing?

Tbird, there was more to it than just the upcoming 5 day suspension. I embarrassed myself, my family, my dept. etc, etc. I did 8 hrs in jail, was in the paper and on the news. If I was joe blow the bagboy i wouldn't have even made the news, but because of my job as a Deputy Sheriff,,,,let's advertise it to the world on the news!

Most people that get a DUI don't get suspended from work. It's because of his badge that he now has a suspension.

If I was to get a DUI, I would be back at work whenever I was released. On top of that, my dirty laundry wouldn't go with me. This guy will have to deal with it after he finishes his suspension.

Don't see how it's that good to have a badge in this case.

yep a DWI sucks, especially when you are in the public eye.

Nobody was hurt, that's good, you wrecked a truck, they are replaceable, damaged reputations take a bit of work to redeem, don't ask me how I know.

Good thing you are not sworn in MA, a DWI is a lifetime disqualifier for a handgun permit.

Been 9 years since I farked up, 9 years of sobriety too.

Most of those people also aren't in a position of authority that are supposed to be setting the example for the rest of us.

Exactly, when you were released, you and I would have done much more then 8 hours in jail for the same thing.

Don't see how it's that good to have a badge in this case.
Curious, is there a record to go along with this? Like you or I would have?

I've already said this but it's worth repeating. It makes the news because being in a position of authority, your supposed to set the example and show better judgment then this. Is that going to be a paid suspension?

I know in the military a DUI can be a career ender. I have seen it get swept under the rug and I have seen soldiers get kicked out of the service. I'm glad no one got hurt. I don't feel sorry for you like some on here. You should loose your job. You should have a record. You did what you preach you shouldn't. 17 years in the military, Its so ingrained in me not to drink and drive. It should have been ingrained in you. I understand people make mistakes. we all have faults. We are humans. But when you take a certain career you are expected to to hold a higher standard. You failed. have a nice day everyone.

Exactly. There are cops that go an entire career of 30-40 years without ever messing up. That's because they understand the responsibility that comes with the badge.

i know he's already really bummed about this whole situation and even though hes not losing his job or anything its still going to follow him for a long time. i think along with you Tbird in that he deserves to be punished since he is supposed to be setting an example but i think he is getting it pretty hard with all the publicity of it.

i also know what you're talking about though with the "it's good to have a badge" though. there was a cop in my town that got caught selling drugs. he got a slap on the wrist, they asked him to resign instead of firing him, and now he is an officer in the next county over.

Sorry to hear that. Your about to find out what your up against. The pendulum has swung far on this issue, and we have gone totally madd. There is a group of society that wants to destroy your life. They want this mistake to cost you a lot of money, our job, and they don't really want you driving any more. It's noting personal, just establishing a deterrent.

Wade, sorry to hear about that man. Glad to know you are manning up to your mistake. I know you want all of this behind you but I assume you might buy it back from the insurance company and sell off some of the parts. I know it was a nice truck and you might be able to get some money back from local members by selling stuff?

It still blows me away that alcohol is the most dangerous, and destructive "DRUG" on the planet.... yet its legal ? Huh ? Who made this $#!+ up anyway ?
This one is simple. its legal because the federal government figured out how to make money on it. its call alcohol tax and its a friggin huge chunk of money.
