anyone ever change a starter on an 04-08 by themselves

So I'm 2 hrs from home and my starter pooped the bed, jumped the solenoid and gotter goin but contemplating doing it myself or takin it to the dealer when I get home. Anybody do one on these trucks? How hard is it? I saw the bolts on the bottom but it was too tight to see the top. TIA

It's really a pain in the butt. The bolt on the top passenger side is a **** to get at. I think I used 2 extensions and a swivel and was only to get one click out of the ratchet every turn. It took about 45 minutes to get that sucker out and another 30 on the way back in. It's really a doable job if you're motivated enough.

Haha, well its 20 degrees, snowing, and I won't get to it until sunday, I think I'm going to leave it at the dealer, they can mess with it

Talk to me about jumping the solenoid. I know I used to be able to do this on my 83 F150 when the solenoid went bad but if the starter is shot how does this make it turn over? I have been stranded twice in 12 mos with a faulty starter. If there is a way to get home in lieu of being towed I need to know how.

There's 2 studs on the solenoid, touch them together with a screwdriver and it starts haha, I don't know how it works but it does. I think the solenoid is what goes wrong not the starter.if you jump it and there's no starter then the starter itself is cooked

Is the solenoid now attached directly to the starter? On my older model F150 the solenoid was under the hood seperate from the starter.
